Did you try using Basic HTML on the Gmail web site? I've always been able to work with the Gmail site in that mode a lot better than the Standard View. After that, you can go into Settings, then Forwarding/pop/Imap and enable POP or IMAP. After that, you can set up Outlook.

I have tried several times unsuccessfully and have had trouble with the setup page for forwarding, POP and IMAP access. I have also tried putting an app specific password in Outlook with no success. Tips welcome.
