[NFBCS] Terminal emulation

Tracy,

I am so often glad I still have my Optacon as well. You appear to be so close to getting Hummingbird to work that it is probably worth poking at some or even seeing if you could get any technical support from Hummingbird. There must be some reason that the cursor is changing shape when you type. Is there any chance your typing is causing the mouse pointer to be moved to the cursor? That is still an option to look for unless you have already done that of course. Sometimes there are options that affect how different types of 3270 fields are displayed as well.

I suppose you might as well see if adjusting the horizontal cursor height to be the same as the vertical cursor height is worth a try in case that would make JAWS track the cursor when it changes shape. Remember what the original setting is in case you need to set it back to the original value.

A cheap option still is QWS3270, and you can get a demo if you want to see if that works. I tried that and it seemed to work all right. My company uses something called "Moccia" which seems to be a bear bones emulator. Although I got it to work, it was really unresponsive, probably because I could not change the blink rate of the cursor. Some companies like it because it is very cheap. I am using IBM Personal Communications 6.0 according to the "About" screen, but I had a lot of trouble with fonts when using it with early versions of Windows 10. As we got into later versions, the problem seemed to be corrected. I say this because that wasn't a smooth journey, either, I did not contact IBM, though, and perhaps they would have had a fix. My problem seemed to affect how information was displayed even without a screen reader running. However, even though my company offered it as an option, nobody else I could easily locate was using it.

I'm really sorry I don't have better answers.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

I have set both the regular cursor and the insert cursor to blink and
"vertical bar", which works well until I start typing. I am over-typing
something in TSO edit, not inserting.
I used the Optacon to look at the cursor shape, and it changed in
Hummingbird in Windows 10, but not in Windows 7. Windows 7 has other
problems.

I'll keep poking at it this week as I have time. If I can't get it to
work, I'll talk to the boss about alternative software.
