[NFBCS] When Money Is Involved

Hello everyone,

	Another reason why projects such as creating division Websites to receive board and membership approval is if money must be spent to create the Website. This can mean registering the domain, paying for hosting, and paying someone to build the website and other Internet resources. I was paid by several state affiliates for registering their domain and for my work for building the site itself. A number of these websites were hosted on NFB Net saving the affiliate the cost of hosting. Since Website construction and management can be a very labor-intensive job I very much appreciated being compensated for my time. My wife Mary can tell you that I worked long into the late night and early morning hours to get these Websites up and running. Because I was paid for my time and effort I was able to put these projects on my resume including links to the Websites themselves so perspective employers could see the kind of Websites I created for these affiliates and divisions.

	Folks I'm all for volunteering but if a project such as managing the division's Internet presence becomes labor-intensive and the division is in a position to do so financial compensation for those charged with managing these resources should be considered. These people need to be paid for their time and effort. It would be the division's responsibility to find ways to raise the needed funds for such projects. This is definitely a matter that would need to go before the division board and if necessary the entire membership. All the best.

First, Kevin, I've created a number of constitutions for new chapters and divisions under the New Jersey affiliate, as well as worked to amend others, including the affiliate's itself to bring them up-to-date. I obviously had to make sure they were in compliance with the national constitution. In every one I've worked on or simply read, there is a statement that reads, "the purpose of the Board of Directors is to transact business between meetings" of the full organization, and the only time the full organization of NFBCS meets is at National Convention.

Bryan, you are absolutely correct that we are a volunteer organization, and I very much appreciate that you are working to bring a new NFBCS website to fruition. That being said, however, we are an organization that needs to follow its constitution, which is why the website needs NFBCS Board approval. It's a necessary process, but it's not difficult or time consuming. President Buhrow simply needs to email the Board members directly with the proposal and any pertinent details, and once he gets a majority to approve, which I also believe will be the case, he can let us know via this listserv and this whole discussion can be put to rest.

It's not a matter of people thinking there is anything underhanded or untoward going on, I certainly don't. We just can't allow ourselves to cut corners. Organizations that are okay with it can quickly find themselves facing a boatload of problems.
