They did it to modernize the user interface. From their point of view, the
ribbon allows them to put more commands and features in the "menu". I don't
really like it either, but we have to live with it now.

I respectfully disagree. There was nothing wrong with the old
menu bar, and I don't know why Microsoft completely did away with it. I
understand that some people prefer the new fangled ribbon bar, both with and
without the virtual ribbon, so people should be able to choose.
BTW, if you want the old menu bar back in Windows Explorer,
there is a program that can turn off the ribbon, but only for Explorer-not
for Office.

Hello:
I am in the camp which strongly recommends that people stop using the JAWS
virtual ribbons and adopt the ribbons provided by Microsoft. There are
numerous tutorials available to teach people how to get at the ribbon
nonvisually. I just sent out an old audio from Blind Training which, in my
opinion, pretty much gives you what you need to make the transition.
Pay particular attention to the Quick Access Toolbar, which has really saved
me a lot of time.
Warm regards,
Curtis Chong

I had the same problem and called JAWS technical support. I was told that
an update from Microsoft likely broke the JAWS virtual menu feature.
Freedom Scientific will work on a resolution for JAWS and push out a JAWS
update at some point.
As a work around, I turned off the JAWS virtual menu option and can now
access ribbons again. I don't plan to go back to the virtual menu even if
the problem gets resolved.
Regards,
Steve

Subject: [NFBCS] JAWS Use Virtual Ribbon Menus Keeps Saying Blank
I think that I have Office 2021; I don't know for sure because I
cannot get to the Help menu in the different programs. I have the latest
version of JAWS. I am running Windows 10 64 bit. I think that this happened
after the latest JAWS update, but it could have been after an update to
Windows, Office, etc. I turn on the "Use Virtual Ribbon Menus" option in the
JAWS setting. Before, it worked fine. Now, if this is turned on, it just
says blank. Sometimes, if I can manage to move into and back out of a
submenu, it will start speaking the information, but most of the time it
just says blank. Has anyone else had this problem?
