Orgullosa!

Dos estudiantes de Nueva Jersey han sido seleccionadas para participar en
una experiencia enriquecedora e inolvidable en Damasco, Siria. Open Hands
Foundation ha elegido a Shafeka Hashash, y a mí, Melissa Lomax, para
participar en la Cumbre de Habilidad de la Juventud. Esta oportunidad nos
permitirá seguir abogando por los demás y marcar una diferencia en las vidas
de muchas personas ¡en todo el mundo!
Ambas de nosotras, somos estudiantes, miembras activas de la Federación
Nacional de Ciegos, a nivel nacional y estatal. Shafeka Hashash es
actualmente la Vicepresidente de la Asociación de Estudiantes Ciegos de
Nueva Jersey, una activa miembra de la sucursal noreste de Nueva Jersey, y
es vocera tanto para los padres de Niños Ciegos, cómo para las convenciones
estatales de la Federación. Yo soy una miembra activa de la Gran sucursal de
la Federación de Baltimore, Maryland, una miembra de la junta directiva de
la Asociación de Estudiantes Ciegos de Maryland, una oradora en las
convenciones de la Federación de Nueva Jersey , y ganadora de una Beca
Nacional del 2010. Por otra parte, nos hemos beneficiado de ser
participantes del programa pde (Liderazgo, Educación, Abogacía, y
Determinación), LEAD. Este programa une a los estudiantes de secundaria de
Nueva Jersey con éxito, a los mentores ciegos para aprender sobre la
tecnología, los problemas que enfrentan los ciegos, y las maneras de tener
éxito e independencia en el futuro. Además, los estudiantes aprenden a
aumentar su movilidad, la vida diaria, la comunicación y las habilidades de
organización.

Con la confianza y el entrenamiento impartidos por LEAD, y la Federación,
hemos  aprendido a no permitir que nuestra ceguera nos impida lograr
nuestros objetivos y aspiraciones. Por el contrario, somos miembras activas
de nuestras comunidades, con un deseo de continuar ayudando a los demás.
Shafeka es una naciente estudiante de ultimo año en la Academia del Condado
de Bergen. Se desempeña cómo capitán del equipo de simulacro de juicio, una
representante de Model de las Naciones Unidas, una miembra de estadistas,
Junior Statesmen of America, la sociedad honorífica, National Honor Society,
la sociedad Tri-M Music Honor Society, una voluntaria de los Boy Scouts de
América, y otras muchas actividades de servicio. En la actualidad, Shafeka
se esfuerza para recibir un Diploma de Bachillerato Internacional, además de
uno de su escuela secundaria.

Después de su graduación, espera asistir a cualquiera de las Universidades

Yo, Melissa, actualmente asisto a la Universidad de Maryland-Baltimore
County, y en el otoño, voy a ser una estudiante de segundo año. Siguiendo un
estudio en Literatura de Inglés con estudio del Inglés escrito, y
certificado de educación secundaria. Mis aspiraciones son convertirme en
profesora de Inglés en una escuela secundaria. Esta meta de la carrera es
apropiada para mí porque siempre he disfrutado de ayudar a los demás, y cómo
profesora, puedo pasar mucho tiempo ayudando a los estudiantes con la mejora
de sus habilidades y el fortalecimiento de su futuro. Actualmente, soy
miembra de la Sociedad Nacional de Becarios Colegiados, y del Consejo de
Estudios de Inglés, una voluntaria para varias organizaciones sin fines de
lucro, líder y coordinadora de InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, y una
defensora de la solución de las crisis de hambre mundial, ayudando en la
coordinación de un banquete mundial del hambre, y un evento de un día de "la
sed por el Agua".
El Lunes, 7 de junio, fuimos notificadas por Open hands Initiative, y
felicitadas por nuestra aceptación en la Cumbre de Habilidad de la Juventud.
Esta cumbre se basa en la Convención de las Naciones Unidas para los
Derechos de Las personas con discapacidad. Somos dos de sólo diez
estadounidenses seleccionadas, todos de los cuales, tienen discapacidades
diferentes, y varían en edad, desde los quince hasta los veintiun años.
Nuestro viaje comenzará el 29 de julio del 2010, cuándo vamos a volar a
Damasco, Siria, por seis días. Allí, nos encontraremos con diez personas de
Siria de la misma edad, que tienen conocimiento en la abogacía.
Esta primera cumbre se iniciará con varias sesiones centradas en educarnos
acerca de los problemas y las desigualdades que muchas personas de todas las
discapacidades encaran. Entonces, vamos a trabajar juntos en la creación de
un cómics, publicándo estas desigualdades y las cuestiones del público
general no informado. Un comics será el mejor método para llegar a los
países en desarrollo, que comprenden una gran parte del mundo. En cuánto a
los países desarrollados, cómo Norte América, vamos a utilizar el cómics,
además de una lluvia de ideas, tales cómo los vidéos de YouTube para llegar
mejor a estas poblaciones.
A pesar de que estamos aprendiendo y trabajando juntos para marcar una
diferencia en el mundo, los investigadores pasaránn tiempo estudiándonos.
Ellos quieren saber la forma en la que nos sentimos incluidos y la forma en
que podemos colaborar con la sociedad para obtener igualdad. Los resultados
serán publicados en revistas, utilizados en presentaciones, y enviados a las
organizaciones por las que abogamos, proveyendo una herramienta más para
transmitir nuestro mensaje. En el aprendizaje y la enseñanza con los
conocedores de la abogacía de Siria, esperamos cambiar la cara de la
discapacidad a nivel mundial.
