While attending the 2012 convention of the National Federation of the Blind at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, don't forget to visit the free literature area in the Grand Ballroom, Atrium Lobby, to pickup copies of The Blind Voter's Guide, The Blind Voter Registration Drive Guide, and, new for 2012, The Blind Poll Worker Recruitment Program Flyer.  All three of these guides were prepared by the NFB Jernigan Institute under a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
 
The nonpartisan Blind Voter's Guide discusses the right of blind individuals to cast a private and independent vote, as guaranteed by the Help America Vote Act (HAVA), why it is important to vote, and how to register to vote.  It is available in Braille, large print, and audiocassette.  
 
Hosting a voter registration drive is a great way for state affiliates and local chapters to attract new members and serve your community.  The Blind Voter Registration Drive Guide will provide you with the tools necessary to plan and hold a voter registration drive for the blind members of your community.  It is available in Braille and large print.
 
Surveys conducted by the NFB have shown that the greatest barrier faced by blind voters to casting a private and independent ballot is the untrained poll worker who does not know how to set-up or operate the accessible voting machine. One of the most effective ways to overcome this barrier is to have blind poll workers who know how to operate the accessible voting machine present in the polls. The Blind Poll Worker Recruitment Program Flyer will provide NFB affiliates and chapters with the information they need to educate their members on how to become a poll worker and why it is important for blind voters to participate in the election process as poll workers. It is available in Braille and large print.
