Mays Landing, Nueva Jersey (15 de abril, 2014): Los miembros de la Federación Nacional de Ciegos (NFB), la organización más antigua y más grande de personas ciegas, y su filial de Nueva Jersey, llevarán a cabo una protesta en la ciudad universitaria de  Mays Landing de la Universidad comunitaria, Atlantic Cape Community College (ACCC) el jueves, 17 de abril desde 11:00 AM hasta 12:30 PM. Las personas ciegas de Nueva Jersey y sus alrededores se están reuniendo a la protesta
de discriminación por la Universidad comunitaria, Atlantic Cape Community College, ACCC, contra Anthony Lanzilotti, un estudiante ciego que estudia la justicia penal y la seguridad cibernética allí. Al señor Lanzilotti se le ha negado incluso la más básica adaptación y, a veces, no se le ha permitido en la ciudad universitaria, utilizar las instalaciones de la ciudad universitaria a menos que esté acompañado por una persona vidente. También se le ha prohibido el uso de los laboratorios de la ciudad universitaria porque la Universidad comunitaria, Atlantic Cape Community College, ACCC, alega que esto viola el código de fuego. La Universidad comunitaria, Atlantic Cape Community College, ACCC, también se ha negado a adquirir o crear
copias accesibles de los libros de texto del señor Lanzilotti y materiales del curso, un servicio que se ofrece habitualmente a los estudiantes ciegos de otros colegios y universidades. Si él quiere que sus libros de texto impresos sean escaneados y convertidos en archivos electrónicos que pueden ser leídos en voz alta por el software de texto a voz o en una pantalla Braille, tiene que hacer el escaneo por sí mismo, y no puede utilizar las instalaciones de la ciudad universitaria para hacerlo a menos que cumpla con el requisito de contar con una persona vidente con él. El Doctor Marc Maurer, Presidente de la Federación Nacional de Ciegos , dijo: "Los estudiantes ciegos a veces se enfrentan a desafíos en el ámbito de la universidad, incluyendo la falta
de acceso a los libros de texto y a los materiales del curso, pero la gran mayoría de las instituciones de educación superior hacen por lo menos un poco de esfuerzo para dar cabida a estos estudiantes. La Universidad Comunitaria, Atlantic Cape Community College, no sólo se ha negado a hacer el mínimo esfuerzo para acomodar al señor   Lanzilotti, sino que, ha añadido sal a la herida a través de la segregación
de sus compañeros de estudios, y la restricción de su acceso a la ciudad universitaria y sus instalaciones. El señor    Lanzilotti no es un niño y no necesita un acompañante. La Federación Nacional de Ciegos tiene la intención de hacer que la discriminación indignante de la Universidad comunitaria, Atlantic Cape Community College, ACCC, contra el señor     Lanzilotti, se dé a conocer al público, y hacer todo lo que esté en nuestras manos para ayudarle en la lucha contra esta discriminación. Las leyes de los Estados Unidos y del estado de Nueva Jersey están firmemente a favor del señor   Lanzilotti, y vamos a ver que se cumplan".

National Federation of the Blind: Atlantic Cape Community College Discriminates Against Blind Student, 
Bans Him from Freely Accessing Campus

 

Federation Members to Protest College's Actions

 
Mays Landing, New Jersey (April 15, 2014): Members of the National Federation of the Blind (NFB), the nation's oldest and largest organization of blind people, and its New Jersey affiliate, will hold a protest at the Mays Landing campus of Atlantic Cape Community College (ACCC) on Thursday, April 17, from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM. Blind people from New Jersey and surrounding areas are gathering to protest discrimination by ACCC against Anthony Lanzilotti, a blind student studying criminal justice and cyber-security there. Mr. Lanzilotti has been denied even the most basic accommodations and at times has not been allowed on campus or to use campus facilities unless he is accompanied by a sighted person. He has also been prohibited from using campus laboratories because ACCC claims that this violates the fire code. ACCC has also refused to procure or create accessible copies of Mr. Lanzilotti's textbooks and course materials, a service routinely provided to blind students by other colleges and universities. If he wants his print textbooks to be scanned and converted to electronic files that can be read aloud by text-to-speech software or on a Braille display, he must do the scanning himself, and he cannot use campus facilities to do so unless he meets the requirement of having a sighted person with him. Mr. Lanzilotti is planning to file suit against the college.
 
Dr. Marc Maurer, President of the National Federation of the Blind, said: "Blind students sometimes face challenges in the college setting, including lack of access to textbooks and course materials, but the vast majority of institutions of higher education make at least some effort to accommodate these students. Atlantic Cape Community College has not only refused to make the minimum effort to accommodate Mr. Lanzilotti, but has added insult to injury by segregating him from his fellow students and restricting his access to the campus and its facilities. Mr. Lanzilotti is not a child and does not need a chaperone. The National Federation of the Blind intends to make ACCC's outrageous discrimination against Mr. Lanzilotti known to the public and to do everything else in our power to assist him in fighting this discrimination. The laws of the United States and the state of New Jersey are firmly on Mr. Lanzilotti's side, and we will see that they are followed."
