Property Tax Lien Sales
Their Impacts on Homeowners and Neighborhoods
Tuesday, April 12
5:30 - 7:30 PM
New Directions Housing Corporation
1000 East Liberty Street
Attend a public forum featuring
Jefferson County Property Valuation Administrator Tony Lindauer
to discuss the impact of Kentucky's statute requiring local governments to
sell outstanding tax liens to private investors.
The Making Connections Network, Legal Aid Society, the Kentucky Equal
Justice Center, the California Collaborative, and Metropolitan Housing
Coalition believe this law causes real harm to families and neighborhoods.
These private investors-many of whom operate from outside Kentucky and have
no interest in the stability of our neighborhoods-file expensive foreclosure
suits and charge exorbitant fees and interest to homeowners in their effort
to collect enforce liens often worth only a few hundred dollars. This
coalition is also examining taxpayer costs and the expansive social costs of
tax lien foreclosures on our city, including the link between the tax liens
sales and the dramatic rise in vacant and abandoned properties.

TOPIC TITLE 3 Public Forum on MHC's Newest Report
TOPIC DETAIL 3
Public Forum on MHC's Newest Report
The State of Fair Housing in Louisville:
Impediments & Improvements
and Map the Meal Gap Data Presented by
Dare to Care Food Bank
Tuesday, March 29
12:00 pm - 1:00 p.m.
New Directions Housing Corporation
1000 E. Liberty Street
On Tuesday, March 29, MHC will host a public forum to present and discuss
the findings of our newest paper, The State of Fair Housing in Louisville:
Impediments & Improvements. The State of Fair Housing examines where
people protected by Fair Housing laws live and explores the barriers that
lie at the heart of true fair housing choice, many of which are inherited.
The report offers action steps to remove barriers to fair housing choice so
that it becomes a reality. If you would like to review the State of Fair
Housing before the brown bag lunch, you can download the new report at
http://metropolitanhousing.org/pdf/mhcdoc_265.pdf.
We are excited to announce that Dare to Care Food Bank will also present and
discuss data from Feeding America's new nationwide study Map the Meal Gap
at the forum. This study, to be released on Thursday, March 24, will
provide a comprehensive picture of food insecurity in communities across the
United States to the county level. The US Dept. of Agriculture defines food
insecurity as "limited or uncertain access to nutritious, safe foods
necessary to lead a healthy lifestyle; households that experience food
insecurity have reduced quality or variety of meals and may have irregular
food intake." The report will paint a picture of food insecurity in greater
Louisville counties- as defined by the gap in meals people can access and
those that they need- as well as the food budget shortfall for individuals
at risk of hunger. Our lack of affordable housing greatly contributes to
this meal gap, as households often have to choose between paying for food
and housing costs. Dare to Care will provide an overview of the local Map
the Gap results and ways our community can meet the challenge posed by our
"meal gap."
We hope to see you on Tuesday for this important discussion.

2011 MHC Annual Meeting
Saving for Our Future
Thursday, May 19, 2011
Louisville Hyatt Downtown
Social Hour: 5:00pm Program & Dinner: 6:00pm
The 22nd MHC Annual meeting features keynote speaker Dan Kildee, a
nationally-recognized expert on vacant property and land banks. Mr. Kildee
is Co-Founder & President of the Center for Community Progress. Prior to
founding the Center, Kildee served as Genesee County (Michigan) Treasurer
from 1997-2009 and was President of the Genesee Institute, a research and
training institute focused on smart growth, urban land reform, and land
banking. Dan has also served on the Executive Committee of the National
Vacant Properties Campaign.
There are 7,268 vacant properties in Louisville Metro as of January 1, 2011.
This shows the great scope of our community's vacant property problem and
the threat it poses to our neighborhoods. Attend MHC's Annual Meeting and
learn from a vacant property expert how Louisville can better address our
vacant property crisis. We can work together to save for our future by
turning vacant properties into assets - not liabilities.

Sponsorships: $500 (for 8 seats)
Reserve your ticket or table now! Consider sponsoring tickets for
