Dear Federationists:

I am writing to ask you to support our 6K Dot Dash, a run/walk to Advance Braille Literacy. We sincerely hope you will consider participating, donating, volunteering, or just spreading the word.

On Sunday, June 5, 2016, at 8:00 a.m., our unique 6K run/walk kicks off at the National Federation of the Blind Jernigan Institute, winds through the quaint neighborhood of Federal Hill, passes through the scenic Baltimore Inner Harbor pavilion, then returns to the Jernigan Institute for the finish. It is a fun, healthy way to make a tremendous difference in the lives of blind people.

Visit the following link to register: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/6-dot-dash-tickets-19950479421. There is a $35 registration fee (plus a credit card service charge).
So, you are not a runner/walker? You, your family, and your friends can participate as volunteers for our 6K Dot Dash by emailing Jen White at jwhite at nfb.org<mailto:jwhite at nfb.org>. We need people to serve in the following capacities:

*         Talking Street Signs

*         Finish Line Monitors

*         Water Station Workers

*         Food Table Workers

We chose a 6K because Braille is the raised dot reading and writing medium used by the blind, where one Braille cell is composed of six raised dots. Braille is the primary literacy tool used by blind people, and literacy is the fundamental building block for success. Research has shown that blind people who know and use Braille have higher rates of employment, self-confidence, and general social integration. Yet only ten percent of blind children are receiving instruction in Braille in public schools. In order to break this cycle of illiteracy, we need to establish stronger literacy programs and train more qualified education professionals. With your assistance, we can continue to conduct the outreach, education, and fundraising necessary to end the "Braille Literacy Crisis."

We appreciate your support. Since 1940, the National Federation of the Blind, the country's oldest and largest organization of the blind, has actively worked to ensure that the blind have access to an appropriate education, gainful employment, and the fundamental civil rights guaranteed to every American citizen. Every day, the programs and projects of the NFB raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. The NFB 6 Dot Dash is an outreach project, a fundraiser, and an expression of our commitment to ensure that blind people are taught the fundamental building blocks of literacy that are essential for their success.
Sincerely,

Anil

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back.
