** Happy September

** From Vet Arts Connect!
------------------------------------------------------------
We can’t believe that Labor Day has come and gone. It was a great
summer for Vet Arts Connect and we hope it was for you as well!
This summer our director, JW Rone, attended the Creative Forces Summit
(https://www.arts.gov/national-initiatives/creative-forces) in
Washington, DC, the Americans for the Arts
(https://www.americansforthearts.org/by-program/reports-and-data/legislation-policy/the-national-initiative-for-arts-health-in-the-military)
National Conference in Denver, CO, the Creative Forces meeting that
was held following the AFTA and taught classes for 2 weeks at Common
Ground on the Hill (https://www.commongroundonthehill.org/) . Yes, it
was jam packed but we made so many new friends and learned even more
about how we can improve our programs and touch more lives in the
Military/Veteran community across the state of Maryland.
Our connection to and relationship with the Maryland State Arts
Council (https://www.msac.org/) (MSAC) is a very important new
pathway that helps us reach out across the state and create new arts
partners. We have been able to expand our geographical diversity by
connecting with: Maker Space at Chesapeake Art Center
(http://www.chesapeakearts.org/makerspace) (Brooklyn Park), Dance
Exchange (http://danceexchange.org/) (Takoma Park), Howard County
Library System (https://hclibrary.org/) , ROOT Studio
(https://www.therootstudio.org/) (in Columbia) and potentially the
Creative Alliance (http://www.creativealliance.org/) in the New Year.
The Vet Arts Connect Goal has been to provide training for our
participating teachers. Until now we have offered a training portal at
PsychArmor Institute (https://psycharmor.org/) , which provides about
2.5 hours of Veteran-centric training. We have now entered into a
partnership with MSAC and the Maryland State Education Department
(MSED) to create a new program called Veteran Ready Teaching Artists.
We are excited to work with these partners on an education program
that will ultimately provide 16 hours of creative and cultural
development for all teachers providing instruction for our Veterans in
Maryland.
Now it is time to start thinking about the fall and getting involved
in all the amazing activities that are available to our Veterans in
Maryland. Below you will find links to exciting programs in theater,
improv, writing, and hiking, check them out and join the classes. We
think it will help you feel better and your participation in the
programs and the evaluation surveys will help us understand more about
how it impacts your overall health and well-being.

** Upcoming Events and Classes
------------------------------------------------------------

** The Root Studio: Introductory Improv for Military Veterans Class
------------------------------------------------------------
One of our new partners, Root Studio
(https://www.therootstudio.org/workshops-events) , is hosting a free
improv class for veterans. You don't have to be skilled to join this
introductory class. Whether you have always wanted to step onstage and
make an audience laugh, or the thought of speaking in front of a crowd
terrifies you; this class is for you. In this class, you will learn
the fundamentals of improvisational theater: listen, agree, add &
immediacy in order to create your own characters and scenes.
This class will start on Thursday, September 20th and continue weekly
through Thursday, October 25th from 7 to 9 PM. A showcase will take
place at the end of the course on Friday, November 2nd.

** Writing from the Heart and Soul: A Workshop for Veterans
------------------------------------------------------------
Military service brings with it diverse feelings including loss,
sacrifice, joy, pride, grief, and gratitude. Our hearts can be full to
overflowing and our souls ache to find a way to express ourselves.
Many communities over the centuries have used songs and poetry as a
means to accompany the warrior upon return from war and military
service. The scriptural psalms or song-poems were a way for the Hebrew
people to express their joys, sorrows, fears, laments, and petitions,
and they continue to serve this function today in many settings.
All writing is confidential unless you wish to share it with the
group. No previous religious experience, affiliation or inclination is
needed. If you are able, please bring something to write with and on:
a journal, laptop, tablet or phone. Some notebooks will be available
on site.
This event takes place on Saturday, September 22nd from 10 AM to 1 PM
at 5034 Wisconsin Avenue, NW
(https://maps.google.com/?q=5034+Wisconsin+Avenue,+NW+2nd+Floor&entry=gmail&source=g)
2nd Floor (https://maps.google.com/?q=5034+Wisconsin+Avenue,+NW+2nd+Floor&entry=gmail&source=g)
, Washington, DC 20016. For more information or to sign up for this
program, click here

.

** Chesapeake Shakespeare Company: Veterans Ensemble
------------------------------------------------------------
The Chesapeake Shakespeare Company, a long standing partner of Vet
Arts Connect, will be hosting its third free educational program for
Veterans, titled "Olive Branch and Laurel Crown". This ensemble will
explore Shakespeare's text for a specific theme related to their own
military service throughout the 10-week course. Following the course,
members of the ensemble will perform a piece of work for their family,
friends, and invited guests.
This class will begin on Tuesday, September 11th and run until
Tuesday, November 13th from 6:30-9 PM. Sessions will be hosted at the
Studio at the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company at 206 E. Redwood Street,
Baltimore, MD 21202.

** 2nd Annual Marching our Veterans Back to Work
------------------------------------------------------------

**
------------------------------------------------------------
The second annual Marching Veterans Back to Work event will take place
on Saturday, September 29th from 9 AM to 2 PM t 8110 Maple Lawn Blvd,
Fulton, MD 20759.

** Veterans Hike Across Maryland
------------------------------------------------------------
Registration is now open for the Veterans Hike Across Maryland,
presented by the Mid-Atlantic Hiking Group. This partnership with Vet
Arts Connects is designed to provide a social outdoor retreat for
veterans. This event will be hosted over five weeks and will cover 41
miles of the Maryland portion of the Appalachian Trail.
While anyone can suffer from stress, anxiety, depression, and other
health issues, the experiences faced by many veterans may make them
more susceptible. Handling these issues is an important step for
improving their wellbeing. While there are many activities that can
alleviate stress, we believe that spending time outdoors in a
wilderness setting can be especially therapeutic. Thus, this
partnership and program are about improving the lives of veterans and
providing evidence to support what we already believe to be true.
Participants will be a part of a study that seeks to answer the
question; does spending time in a wilderness setting help to alleviate
stress, anxiety, depression, improve energy, or improve one’s sense of
self-worth. We hope the answer will be a resounding yes, and we are
confident that all who join us will see their lives made greater and
more fulfilling!

series, click here. (http://vetshikeacrossmd.org/registration.html)
