[nfbmi-talk] Skydiving, Anyone?

Hello All,
In truth, I am pretty sure that J.J. did mean 13,000 feet. When the
training center students went sky diving in October, 2008, they jumped from
10,000 feet. The only reason that they started at 10 instead of 13
thousand, was because the temperature at the lower altitude was a chilly 15
degrees on that bright fall day, which happened to be quite warm on the
ground. In August, I am sure that the temperature is not too bad, even at
13,000.

You see Fred, because the first 5 thousand feet or so of the jump are done
in free-fall, you do not remain at that altitude for more than a few
seconds. I am told that this is why it is safe. The students and their
instructors pulled their parachute cords at approximately 6,000 feet, and
spent about 8 minutes floating to the ground from that height.

Remember too, that Colorado has 8 or more mountain peaks that rise higher
than 14,000 feet and their heights are regularly scaled by hikers without
oxygen.

It is fantastic! It really is! I ended up jumping too, because my doing so
turned out to be necessary in order for one of our students to get the
experience that she needed to make our whole plan work out. I was more than
a little frightened, but it was amazing, and according to statistics that
have been kept for the last quarter century or so, sky diving is less
dangerous than traveling by airplane, driving, or using any form of public
transportation.

So there you have it...one woman's insight, for whatever it might be worth.

Christine

J.J., I'm sure you meant 1,300. If you were up 13,000 feet you would likely
have a difficult time living through the experience.

P.S., When it gets closer to the time, let me know and I'll see if I can
make it up for the jump. Good luck.
