consumers

Good Afternoon,

HKNC is inaugurating its Peer Learning Groups – a total of twelve (12)
different offerings. The support groups involve active discussion among
registered participants who are deaf-blind, different days of the week at
designated times. These are at NO COST and will be through Zoom
videoconferencing. Refer to the attached for descriptions of the peer
learning groups. We ask that you familiarize yourselves with each peer
learning group description.

Our first, the COVID19 Live Chat starts this week with five (5) students on
Wednesdays, 2:00-3:00pm EST. The other groups will commence the week of
April 20th.

These offerings have been uploaded onto HKNC’s website:
https://www.helenkeller.org/hknc/peer-learning-groups

Subject: Announcement: HKNC's Additional Peer Learning Groups

Good Afternoon Regional Representatives, Administrative Assistants,
Deaf-Blind Specialists, and CA CSP Team,

HKNC is announcing three additional Peer Learning Groups (PLGs), which
include:

1) Savvy Shopper

2) Living on Your Own

3) Advocacy in a Deaf-Blind World (ADBW) for ASL users

The attached document provides group descriptions for the above three. The
website will be updated to reflect the new groups.
https://www.helenkeller.org/hknc/peer-learning-groups

For registered participants in existing groups, this information is
available S:\All Staff\Peer Learning Groups

Much appreciation goes to Laura Benge for her coordination of this PLG
registration and below are her suggestions in going forward.

1.. Wait lists are being made for each group.
2.. We have two Usher syndrome Support Groups, one for hard of hearing and
a second new group for ASL users.
3.. Change the subject line in the instructions from “Virtual Classes” to
“Peer Learning Groups” – see 4.b for reason.
  4.. In the email itself:
1.. Include case managers, Reps and group facilitators in the same
emails. Even if the email is a request for Reps to distribute it’s important
the CMs know what is happening. There has been a lot of misinformation going
around and the more organized we can be, the more consistency we’ll have.
2.. Suggest that when referring to the PLGs people use “groups” rather
than “classes” many consumers are informing their VRCs of these “Classes”
and I can see a lot of frustration in the future if VRCs think some remote
classes are offered at no cost and others aren’t.
3.. Remind the Reps, CMs and facilitators that my role is to organize
the contact information and communication preference - it’s not to convince
students of which PLG is the best for the, identify accommodations for their
group, etc.
4.. In each email blast, bold the fact that these PLGs are for deafblind
individuals who are 16 years and older. Many parents and professionals have
been reaching out after the NCOP email blast.

I know this is a learning experience for all of us, but if we can be
proactive about organization, it will help me manage these intakes in a
timely manner and minimize the frustration the group facilitators are
feeling from inconsistent information from multiple sources.

Thank you for all your support in disseminating the three new groups to
your consumers.

Laura Benge will be the contact person, where she will take the individual’s
name, email/phone/VP and state contact information, preferred communication
mode, and choice of peer learning group. She will have this information in
an email to the individual and send to the first facilitator identified in
the group and to the regional representative.

Send the attached to your current students, former students and consumers.
Also send to your VR partners, families, state deaf-blind projects and other
service providers, including members of your state deaf-blind interagency
teams. Include Sue, Carrie and I in your email distro.

We’re excited to be offering these opportunities and through your
dissemination of the attached with a customized email from you, we are
confident these groups will fill up quickly.
