Birding without Barriers: Bird song Basics
Date: May 9th & 16th, 2025
Time: 9:45 AM – 12 pm
Location: Pinelands Preservation Alliance
People sing. Birds sing. Whether the singer is human or avian, the song is
composed of common elements such as pitch, rhythm, and tempo. Using
examples of songs you may hear in your own neighborhood or nature spots in
Burlington County, this presentation will help you focus on the various
parts of a bird’s song so that you will be able to identify birds by their
songs.
This program is an indoor/outdoor event. The indoor presentation will last
about an hour and will be followed by an outdoor session in the Bishop
Farmstead meadow trail and garden where we will take a slow hike to listen
for bird songs and bird sounds Please join us as we follow avid bird
enthusiast, Claire Campbell, on this outdoor adventure. We will look for
interesting birds that are residents or just passing through the area.
This inclusive and accessible family-friendly outing follows along a mowed
0.5 mile meadow trail at the Pinelands Preservation Alliance's Bishop
Farmstead. The farm is a picturesque location perfect for birding
opportunities as the site has a mixture of open meadow and tree line
habitats. This farm is a good place to get long, clear looks at birds
because of the relative openness. It is also a nice place to know about,
especially because of its quick and easy access to birding for almost
anyone.
Accessibility Information: The total length of this route is 0.5 miles.
The trail is a round-trip route that follows flat, even mowed grass
terrain. There are minor changes in elevation encountered on this trip. The
trail is a minimum of six feet wide. The general trail surfaces are
compacted soils, which will allow for rugged terrain wheelchair access. The
runtime of the event is estimated to be 2 hours. While there are no benches
on the trail, there are benches on the property to sit, relax and listen to
the sounds of nature. There are 5 ADA-compliant parking spaces on site, and
plenty of additional parking. There are accessible bathrooms in the
restored barn.
Pinelands Adventures has several all-terrain wheelchairs available for use
upon registration through Pinelands Adventures.
If you have questions, concerns about the program or loan chairs for this
event email Sean Kane-Holland, Access Nature Disability Advocate at
sean at pinelandsalliance.org or call (609) 859-8860 ext. 117
Note: Participants that are not requesting to use Pineland Adventures
wheelchairs can come prepared with their own mobility assistive devices. If
needed bring walkers, canes, crutches, and personal outdoor assistive gear.
The trails are conducive to allowing electric assistive mobility equipment.
The meeting place is the Red Barn at Pinelands Preservation Alliance’s HQ
at Bishop Farmstead.
