Research Participation Request: Empowering the People with Visual 
Impairments to Write Independently
The below research participant solicitation is being provided for 
informational purposes only. The National Federation of the Blind has 
no involvement in this research, but we believe that it may 
contribute to our research mission.
Research Title: Empowering the People with Visual Impairments to 
Write Independently
Being conducted by: Stevens Institute of Technology
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this study is to design and evaluate a handwriting 
training system that empowers individuals with visual impairments to 
write independently. By tackling challenges in handwriting 
accessibility through wearable technology, novel algorithms, and 
intuitive user interfaces, the study seeks to improve literacy, 
communication, and self-expression. The ultimate goal is to promote 
autonomy, inclusivity, and equal opportunities for people with visual 
impairments, enhancing their ability to fully participate in 
educational, professional, and social settings.
Role of the Participants and Anticipated Length of the Study
If you agree to participate in this study, you will take part in a 
handwriting training and evaluation session designed for people with 
visual impairments. The entire session will take approximately 2.5 
hours and will take place in person using a tablet and a 
custom-designed handwriting training app.

b)        Handwriting evaluation
c)        Learning simplified alphabet letters
d)        Handwriting evaluation
d)        Post-task interview
Proposed Participant Compensation
Yes, Participants will be paid $30 for 1 hour and $15 per half hour 
thereafter. Compensation will be provided in the form of Amazon Gift 
card. Travel Cost will be reimbursed if travel within NY and NJ.
