On behalf of the affiliate, I congratulate and thank these dedicated
members for their commitment to advocating for the rights of blind
Americans. We also extend appreciation to all who expressed interest in
joining this year’s delegation.
At the *Washington Seminar*, members of the National Federation of the
Blind gather to discuss and advance legislative initiatives that promote
equality, opportunity, and independence for blind individuals. Each year,
approximately three legislative priorities—based on resolutions adopted at
our national convention—are highlighted. These typically address issues
such as:
- Civil rights and equal opportunity
- Education and rehabilitation services
- Competitive employment for blind individuals
- Operation of vending facilities on public property
- Specialized library services
- Federal program organization and funding
- Social Security Disability and SSI programs
- Other timely matters affecting the blind community
Since its inception in *1973*, the Washington Seminar has brought together
more than *500 representatives* from all fifty states, the District of
Columbia, and Puerto Rico.
With gratitude,
*Linda Melendez, *President
