Positive Note 1447
Dear Fellow Federationists:
I begin this Positive Note with an announcement from Stephanie Nelson, the wife of State Board member Isaiah Nelson. Here is what she says. "When composing the next positive note would you please thank Senator John L. Scott Jr. of the 19th District for supporting his constituents by patronizing the Annual BBQ. I asked him to show his support for Isaiah by participating. I also asked a friend of mine to send the WLTX Channel 19 TV News Crew to give media coverage of the BBQ. I hope it was helpful. We appreciate Stephanie's efforts and Isaiah's work as well.
For another couple of days, we will still be accepting reservations for the NFB of SC Cruise, which would occur between the dates of February 7, 2015, and February 14, 2015; however, if we do not have sufficient interest, we will scrap the idea and try another activity. No hard feelings, it's just that we do not have enough cabins booked to raise money for the NFB of SC, and there is no need to do it if members are not interested.
If you would like to go on the Cruise, please be sure to get in touch with Anahit Labarre at alabarre at labarretravel.com or 720-334-3652. Anahit can give you the details you will need to complete your travel plans. But you must do this immediately so we will know if we have sufficient participation. I will tell you next week if plans change.
Advocacy Day for Access and Independence is happening on Thursday, May 8, 2014, which is of course this week, at the State House. This is a gathering of some twenty-one disability-related organizations with similar goals to our own. A number of chapters are planning to transport members to Advocacy Day using their chapter vans, which is a most welcomed idea.
I hope you can join us between 9:00 AM and 12:30 PM on Thursday, May 8, to increase public awareness about independence and equality from the prospective of the largest minority group in the nation: people with disabilities.
Speakers will include leaders from the advocacy organizations across the state as well as leaders in state government, such as Governor Haley. I will be pleased to be in the line-up of speakers on Thursday morning. I will also take time to visit with some of the state legislators involved in the South Carolina Blind Persons Right to Parent Act, currently pending in the House of Representatives having passed the Senate unanimously earlier this year. I hope to see you there. Joining me for comments in this Positive Note is the President Emeritus of the NFB of SC. Here is Dr. Capps.
We begin this portion of the Positive Note by expressing sincere gratitude for financial support received a couple of days ago including a $1,000 contribution from Walmart in Easley. Easley businesses also made contributions totaling $670. I know that Children's Camp Director Tracy Spittle and her husband Thom are grateful for this support which will enable them to accommodate the usual number of children attending camp. Also, we congratulate Gwen Ellenburg for her contacts in the Easley area resulting in the gratifying financial support for Children's Camp. This is a very important program as our blind children need as much training and education as available and these programs deserve maximum support.
We also received significant contributions from our Chesterfield County Chapter under the excellent leadership of Dorcas Campbell. These contributions total $450 and include $50 for Rocky Bottom Fun Day, $100 for Children's Camp, $100 for the Federation Center of the Blind, $100 for the NFB of SC Scholarship Fund and $100 for the NFB of SC White Cane program. All of these entities receiving support by our Chesterfield County Chapter are all very deserving and merit generous financial support.
We regret very much the loss of our good friend and supporter, Shirley Holmes of Laurens who passed away on April 20, 2014. Mrs. Holmes was very much involved in our programs, especially Rocky Bottom. We have received numerous RBRCCB living memorial contributions in memory of Mrs. Holmes which we appreciate. She also served a number of years on the Advisory Board of the Bell Federation Center of the Blind. Mrs. Holmes was a nurse for Senior Camp at RBRCCB where she gained respect and love by those she served. We are advised by Doris Bell that Mrs. Holmes was beneficial to the Laurens Chapter and the Bell Center as well as Rocky Bottom. She gave generously of her time and energy and from her nursing talents. She was helpful to many. She was 78. We will miss the many benefits provided by this lovely lady.
Speaking of Senior Camp the first week long camp will take place the week of May 18. There will also be an Advisory Board meeting on Monday, May 19 as our Senior Camp program will be featured for the Advisory Board members. With the cold winter weather behind us, we welcome this beautiful time of the year and our different programs for the blind over the state will be taking place over the next several months. Let's not forget to sell our $5 Fun Day tickets. Our Sumter Chapter is still ahead in ticket sales but it will be noted that our Chesterfield County Chapter has sold some $50 of these tickets. The Center here in Columbia and its Executive Director David Houck are very busy these days and any financial support of the Center is very much in order. Congratulations to Betty who celebrated her 83rd birthday on Monday, May 5.
Final Thought: "Remember when customer service meant the business servicing the needs of the customer, not the customer servicing the needs of the business?"
