Dear Federation Family,
Thursday, November 28, 2024 is Thanksgiving Day and the National Federation
of the Blind of South Carolina has much to be grateful for. There are many
leaders who work hard to move the organization forward every day. There are
many great members and friends who work tirelessly to accomplish the goals
of the Federation. All give unreservedly of their time and resources. What a
blessing the National Federation of the Blind of South Carolina is to the
Palmetto state! Thursday is a special day when family and friends will
gather to celebrate and give thanks for many things. Let us take time to
reflect upon the year and all our blessings. Reach out to someone who may be
alone this year and invite them to your gathering.
Invest in dignity: Every dollar you give doubles
The NFB matching gift challenge to advance the lives of blind people
Dignity is the foundation of freedom, justice, and peace in the world. The
National Federation of the Blind (NFB) is committed to advancing the lives
of blind people, but they need your help. When you give, you help build
understanding, respect, and opportunities for all blind people to live the
lives they want.
This is why we at HumanWare are happy to participate again in the NFB
matching campaign, where every dollar given doubles between October 1 and
the end of 2024.
Three ways to give and double your dollars:
Give online: nfb.org/donate
Mail a check to: National Federation of the Blind, 200 East Wells Street,
Baltimore, MD 21230
Contribute by phone: Call 410-659-9314, extension 2430, to donate using a
credit card.
Stay tuned: More matching campaign activities and updates
This Thanksgiving, we are thankful for all NFB donors and the Federation
family for helping to bridge the gap between blind people and their dreams.
To show our gratitude, the NFB will make a special announcement during the
week of #GivingTuesday.
URGENT Legislative Alert - Transformation to Competitive Integrated
Employment Act
We are coming down to the wire on the 118th Congress and we want to make
sure that weve done everything that we possibly can in order to advocate
for our legislative priorities. In this case, we are trying to ensure that
the Transformation to Competitive Integrated Employment Act (TCIEA) is
included in the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA)
reauthorization bill that is currently being considered. Right now is a
crucial time for this initiative because Congress wants to pass the WIOA
reauthorization when they return after Thanksgiving. We need you to flood
the email inboxes and telephone lines and voicemail boxes of four key
committee staff members in order to make sure TCIEA gets included in the
final bill:

Pensions

When you call or email, you might say something like:
Dear [NAME]:
I am urging the [HOUSE EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE COMMITTEE/SENATE HELP
COMMITTEE] to please include the TCIEA in the WIOA reauthorization bill. The
TCIEA will eliminate the payment of subminimum wages for people with
disabilities and eliminate the need for a government program to monitor
special wage certificate holders. Thank you.
If you send an email, please use the subject line Please Include the TCIEA
in the WIOA Reauthorization and copy Justin Young jyoung at nfb.org
<mailto:jyoung at nfb.org> .
Congress is working diligently to move the WIOA reauthorization bill as soon
as they get back after the Thanksgiving break, so time is of the essence for
us to make our voices heard. If you have any questions, please contact me.

>From Jamie Allison
The Braille Literacy committee has chosen once again to sponsor the NFB
American Action Fund Braille Readers are Leaders contest! In the past, our
state has had good representation, including a national level prize winner
last year! To participate, just track what youre reading in Braille and
for how many minutes each day using the Beanstack database on your computer
are smartphone. The number of minutes a participant reads is tracked with a
database called Beanstack, which can be accessed either by a computer with
the internet or a smartphone app. Registration opens on November 15, 2024.
Minutes are counted from December 2, 2024-January 17, 2025 with national
prize winners announced on March 2, 2025. Contests for both children and
adults are divided into groups based on how proficiently you read Braille.
The committee is working to come up with some state-level prizes for this
year's contest as well, and of course, the districts will battle it out
again to see which one will hold the bragging rights for reading the most
minutes! Please feel free to reach out to Jamie at
nfbsccherokeejamie at gmail.com <mailto:nfbsccherokeejamie at gmail.com> or
864-838-0338 for further details or to get help with registering and
tracking progress.
