I rarely comment on the job postings that I choose to submit to this list.
However, a few items from this announcement really jumped out at me and I
feel the need to provide the following feedback.
. Act professionally at all times as a representative of ASB, demonstrated
by interacting positively with ASB Staff, program participants, volunteers,
Board Members, organizational partners and guests
I would think this should be obvious to any applicant or employee of any
organization. It's a given that any employee should know that anything they
do, even during their off time, represents the company that they work for.
As an employee I always strive to behave professionally toward my coworkers,
managers, customers and business partners.
. Completion of work in a timely and high-quality manner, meeting
established deadlines and sensitive to the needs of the ASB targeted
population
Again, I would think this should be obvious. This is an expectation that I
assume all employees should already be aware of.
. Makes and keeps commitments
This is a rather vague expectation which I've never seen in a job listing,
at least not written in this manner. Of course, any work-related commitments
from an employee are expected to be kept but this particular expectation is,
as I've said, a bit vague.
. Does not participate in non-productive activities or conversations
I honestly can't believe this even appeared in the job posting and I was
frankly shocked when I read it. There is so much that I could unpack from
this one bullet point but I'm not sure that doing so is worth my time to
write a response. I have read a countless number of job descriptions over
the years and I have never seen anything even remotely like this last item
in any of them. It doesn't belog in a job posting and it may give potential
applicants a bad feeling about the agency and some may wonder what type of
environment they may be walking into. ASB is an agency with a great
reputation and its consumers have had great experiences with the agency's
services. This job posting, and in particular the last item that I quoted,
presents a negative picture of what potential employees might expect and
could possibly cause qualified candidates to not apply.
