DEAF/BLIND DIRECT SUPPORT NEEDED IN DELAWARE COUNTY , PA
ARE YOU READY TO REACH BEYOND THE MOON AND CATCH YOURSELF A STAR?
Currently looking to hire an experienced deaf/blind Direct Support
Professional. The participant has no hearing, is totally blind and is
unable to talk therefore observation is key to successful support. The
participant uses gestures and ASL tactile signs, as well as object
exchange communication , staff makes the signs and he receives them.
The participant loves to hold hands to identify staff and people by
feel. The participant may hold on to staff for an extended period of
time to become familiar with them and hold on to staff to know who
they are by touch and form a connection. The participant is ambulatory
and can navigate familiar territory . He enjoys waterplay games,
sensory activities and likes to rock and swing. It is important to
know that the individual must maintain his toileting schedule and stay
safe in the community at all times.

The qualified Direct Support Professional will support the participant
with developmental disabilities who is also blind, deaf, and/or
non-verbal in their quest to achieve self-direction, person centered
planning and human dignity through their Everyday Life. The qualified
candidate will be knowledgeable in tactile ASL, have some
understanding of "CHARGE" and or be willing to learn and train on it.
The qualified DSP must be caring, responsible, routine-orientated,
trustworthy, patient, willing to learn and an enthusiastic
professional who takes pride in supporting the deaf/blind population
with communication, socialization, personal care and the development
of independent living skills.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other
duties may be assigned.
Provide one-on-one and person centered -focused, direct services to
the participant in his Everyday Life.
Work collaboratively with his Support Team to develop and implement
the outcomes, goals, needs and desires in the Individualized Support
Plan (ISP).
Provide additional direct services as needed which may include
assistive technology (AT), instrumental activities of daily living
(IADL) assistance, self-advocacy training, and other staffing supports
as determined on a daily basis.
Observation, tactical communication Assist with identifying service
gaps and unmet needs of participant.
Collaborate with community partners and resources to identify
participants DeafBlind needs for inclusion .
Provide opportunities and choices for community participation for all
individuals supported.
Maintain current training required for the provision of services.

REQUIRED
Knowledge and/or Experience
Knowledge of the educational needs of deaf/hard-of-hearing and/or
blind/visually impaired Knowledge of the principles and techniques of
effective communications; Knowledge of the principles, methods and
techniques of supporting someone in the deaf/blind community;
Ability to implement routine, schedules, planning of activities and
learning experiences within the home as well as the community; Ability
to handle problems, concerns and emotional distress with sensitivity
and tact; Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques; Ability to
work independently; Ability to understand and apply applicable rules,
regulations, policies and procedures relating to working with
participant; Ability to be patient
Ability to communicate effectively using DEAF/BLIND TACTILE sign
language by signing across the continuum (English word order to ASL)
