Dear Disability Community Members:

The San Francisco Department of Public Works is looking for people with mobility disabilities and people with visual disabilities who use canes to participate in paid research studies to identify detectable material that will be used for separation between bike lanes and pedestrian lanes as part of the Better Market Street sidewalk–level bikeway proposal.

The study will be evaluating six different materials. The optimal material selection will be used for implementation in the Better Market Street project. This separation material is intended to improve safety for pedestrians with disabilities, and also help deter bicyclists from riding in the pedestrian zone. Participants will receive a $100 stipend.

Please read below for participation details on the two research groups (people with visual disabilities who use canes and mobility disabilities).

For Participants with Mobility Disabilities
Research Dates: June 16-22
Location: Pier 38, San Francisco (The Embarcadero between Brannan and Townsend Street. Testing will be conducted inside the Pier building).
Purpose and Scope: To test and traverse separation materials using mobility devices (e.g., wheelchair, cane, walker, etc.). Separation materials will be placed around an 80 foot by 50 foot rectangle. A mobility specialist will lead participants around the rectangle to detect each material and collect feedback. The walking or traveling distance is approximately 240 feet and will require each participant to make six turns. Each session will last approximately 45 minutes.
To select a date and time, contact: Rosie Dilger (415) 794-0101, or thecivicedge.com

For Participants with Visual Disabilities who use canes:
Research Dates: June 29-July 9 (excluding July 4)
Location: Pier 38, San Francisco (The Embarcadero between Brannan and Townsend Street. Testing will be conducted inside the Pier building).
Purpose and Scope: To detect the delineator surface and differentiate between truncated dome detectable warning surfaces. We are looking for experienced travelers who are cane users and who are available to participate in the research for one 1 ½ to 2 hour session.
To select a date and time, contact: Linda Myers at Lmyersom at gmail.com.

Please stay tuned for other usability testing opportunities for everyone.
