Dear Family Support Group Participant,



The purpose of this Family Support Group session is to provide an
opportunity for sighted family members to learn how to be supportive of
their visually impaired family member’s vision loss needs and to provide
support to family members as well.



Whether your family member is only able to see light, sees shapes/shadows,
can read large print or is totally blind, your needs will be address
throughout the meeting.



During the third family support group session, the following topics will be
discussed and addressed:



#1. Blindness and adaptive skills and ability to perform activities of
daily living will be addressed.



#2. Effective verbal and nonverbal communication will be presented.



#3. “Blindisms” related behavior and vision loss will be discussed.



#4*. Vision and Hearing loss*, Aging and other disabilities will be
addressed.



#5. You will learn how to avoid potentially embarrassing vision loss
related situations.



#6: Tools to facilitate independence will be offered.



#7 .Practical Application: Please have the following items available to
you:  blind fold, table/desk work space, posted notes and felt pen, table
setting (plate and utensils), slice of sandwich bread, fruit/unpeeled
orange, tray; an empty glass, bottle water, and damp paper towels.
