Weekend renovation to improve reliability, service on all five Metrorail lines

For immediate release: November 10, 2010

Upgrades to improve efficiency, performance

This weekend (November 12-14) Metro will upgrade its platforms, rail
bridges, install new crossties and new track to improve long-term
reliability and service. As a result of this crucial work, which is
critical to maintain the railroad in a state of good repair, trains on
all lines will be single-tracking, and riders should expect their
trips to take up to 30 minutes longer than usual.

Red Line Platform Repairs, Track Maintenance

Metrorail customers traveling between the Shady Grove and Twinbrook
Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time
because Metro will repair the deteriorated platform at the Rockville
Metrorail station to return it to a state of good repair. Trains will
share one track between these locations the entire weekend from 8 p.m.
Friday, November 12, to closing on Sunday, November 14.

Metrorail customers traveling between the New York Ave-Florida
Ave-Gallaudet U and Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood Metrorail stations
should add at least 20 minutes to their travel time because Metro will
conduct necessary maintenance on a portion of the tracks outside the
Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood Metrorail station. This work is necessary
to maintain reliable service through that area. Trains will share one
track between these locations the entire weekend from 10 p.m. Friday,
November 12, to closing on Sunday, November 14.

On Saturday, November 13, and Sunday, November 14, Red Line trains
will depart approximately every 15 minutes from the Shady Grove and
Glenmont Metrorail stations.

For riders traveling between the Grosvenor-Strathmore and New York
Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U Metrorail stations, trains will operate
approximately every 8 to 9 minutes.

Orange Line Cross Tie Installation

Metrorail customers traveling between the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU and West
Falls Church-VT/UVA Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes
to their travel time because Metro will replace cross ties on the
tracks in that area. Trains will share one track between these
locations from 10 p.m. Friday, November 12, to closing on Sunday,
November 14.

Throughout the weekend, every other Orange Line train traveling in the
direction of the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metrorail station will terminate
at the West Falls Church-VT/UVA Metrorail station and return to the
New Carrollton Metrorail station.

Blue and Yellow Line Aerial Structure Repairs

Metrorail customers traveling between the Braddock Road and Pentagon
City Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel
time because Metro will make repairs on the aerial structure outside
the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Metrorail station to
return it to a state of good repair. Trains will share one track
between these locations from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Saturday, November
13 and Sunday, November 14.

During this time, all Yellow Line trains will operate approximately
every 30 minutes between the Huntington and Mt. Vernon Sq/7th
St-Convention Center Metrorail stations. Yellow Line trains will
depart the Huntington Metrorail station approximately at six minutes
and 36 minutes after the hour. Yellow Line trains will depart the Mt.
Vernon Sq/7th St-Convention Center Metrorail station at approximately
16 minutes and 46 minutes after the hour. Upon conclusion of
single-tracking from 6 p.m. to closing, Yellow Line trains will
operate approximately every 15 to 20 minutes between the Huntington
and Fort Totten Metrorail stations.

Blue Line trains will operate every 30 minutes between the
Franconia-Springfield and Largo Town Center Metrorail stations. Blue
Line trains will depart the Franconia-Springfield Metrorail station
approximately at the top of the hour and 30 minutes after the hour.
Blue Line trains will depart the Largo Town Center Metrorail station
approximately at 16 minutes and 46 minutes after the hour. Upon
conclusion of single-tracking from 6 p.m. to closing, Blue Line trains
will operate approximately every 15 to 20 minutes between the
Franconia-Springfield and Largo Town Center Metrorail stations.

Green Line Rail Installation

Metrorail customers traveling between the Prince George’s Plaza and
College Park-U of Md Metrorail stations should add at least 20 minutes
to their travel time to allow Metro to weld new rail on the tracks in
that area to keep them in a state of good repair. Trains will share
one track between these locations from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday,
November 13 and Sunday, November 14.
