Meeting of the Board of Directors
Friday, November 1, 2019

The National Federation of the Blind of Virginia's Board of Directors
meeting was called to order by President Tracy Soforenko
Roll Call: 48 members were present
Minutes for August 17th board meeting were read by Evelyn Valdez. Minutes
were approved without correction
Treasurer's Report
Treasurer's report was read by Mark Roane
Reporting period was July 31, 2019 - September 30, 2019
General checking account balance as of September 30 is $32,559.62
Treasurer's report was accepted without any corrections
*Assistive listening devices will be available at the Information table
Chapter Reports
Fairfax Chapter President Carr reported that they recently had an Emergency
Preparedness specialist from the Office of Emergency Management of Fairfax
County come to speak to their chapter membership and they held an Uno event
for the release of the Uno card game.
Blue Ridge Chapter had no representation
At-Large Chapter President Patrick Johnson stated that the At-Large chapter
will have an open reception for those interested on Friday, Nov. 1st
Chesapeake Bay Chapter President Asher stated that they have done bowling
fundraisers and family advocacy.
Eastern Shore Chapter President Pittman stated thay had a county-wide
servicing organizations with individuals with disabilities.
Fredericksburg Chapter President Ingram stated they had their annual
Walk-a-thon and they have launched a newsletter
Greater Alexandria Chapter President Valdez stated that they have teamed up
with Seedlings Braille Books for Children to adopt 3-year old Elijah,
conducted a Glory Days Grill fundraiser, participated in the Disability
Awareness event with the Department of Defense, several chapter members
spoke to high school and middle school students at TC Williams and Hammond
in Alexandria City, and Arielle Silverman and Susie D'Mello read twin vision
books during story time at the library
Greater Williamsburg Chapter President Jones stated they had their Walk with
the Blind and they will be changing their meeting time to Thursdays from
7pm-9pm beginning in the new year to accommodate potential membership
Peninsula Chapter President Harrison stated they had their spaghetti dinner
fundraiser and they are planning to hold a toy drive
Potomac Chapter President Halverson stated they had a successful technology
fair in June and Arlington County Office of Registrar demoed accessible
voting machines in October
Prince William Chapter President Montiel stated that they will be having an
event at the Marine Corps museum in Quantico
Richmond Chapter President Lawless stated they had their Chili cookoff and a
team of members are making huge efforts to reach out to new members living
in the outskirts of Richmond where transportation is a little tricky
Tidewater Chapter President Prost stated they have guest speakers to discuss
paratransit and access to mobility and he welcomes everyone to Portsmouth!
Winchester Chapter President Walker stated they have been speaking to Lyons
and Kiwanis clubs; also, the chapter has established two scholarships for
students attending Shenandoah University.
