Hey NFB Family and Friends,
Another entry from our Black Empowerment Committee about Black History
Month. Enjoy!
Day 8 of Black History Month
Dr. Shirley Jackson is an American physicist who received her Ph.D. from the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1973.
She was the first African-American woman to earn a doctorate in nuclear
physics at MIT. She is also the second African-American woman in the United
States to earn a doctorate in physics. In 1995, she was appointed to be the
Chairman of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) by President Clinton,
becoming the first woman and first African American to hold that position.
In addition to her lengthy list of academic achievements, she also has an
impressive number of inventions under her belt.
Her experiments with theoretical physics paved the way for numerous
developments in the telecommunication space including the touch-tone
telephone, the portable fax, caller ID, call waiting, and the fiber-optic
cable.
Among her many honors, awards, and appointments include her inducted into
National Women's Hall of Fame in 1998 for "her significant contributions as
a distinguished scientist and advocate for education, science, and public
policy". Her appointment to serve on the President's Council of Advisors on
Science and Technology, a 20-member advisory group dedicated to public
policy by Barack Obama. Her 2012, appointment to the Royal Academy of
Engineering as an International Fellow (FREng).
In 1999, Dr. Shirley Jackson was appointed to be the 18th president of
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, a position she still
holds presently.
