*VRCBVI is pleased to resume its virtual training program on Friday
afternoons this fall!*
*VRCBVI Virtual Trainings are open to anyone and free of charge. * Like our
prior trainings, we will be using Zoom as our virtual platform. If any
accommodations are needed, please contact Amy Phelps (
amy.phelps at dbvi.virginia.gov) no later than fourteen days in advance of the
training. And if you have any questions about the registration process or
virtual training sessions, please contact Greg Chittum at 804-371-3204 or
greg.chittum at dbvi.virginia.gov. Finally, we offer certificates of
participation to individuals who need to maintain professional
certification. If you would like a certificate for a training you attend,
please email brooke.rogers at dbvi.virginia.gov with the title of the
presentation, the beginning and ending codes, and the certification you are
maintaining.

*Friday, October 15* - 1:00 to 3:00 (2 hours) Pre-ETS
*National White Cane Awareness Day: What it is, Why We Celebrate It, and
What Does It Mean for Blind Individuals Who Travel Independently*
Each year, October 15 marks White Cane Awareness Day. In this session, you
will learn about the history of White Cane laws and how they affect blind
individuals. You will also hear about activities across the country that
individuals are engaging in on this day to educate families, friends and
the general public about how using the long white cane helps blind people
engage actively in the world around them.

*Managing Medications With Low/No Vision*
Do not let blindness be an excuse to not manage your own medications. From
Accessible Pharmacy to ScripTalk... learn about resources and devices that
can help you take control of your health!

*Friday, October 29* - 1:00 to 3:00 (2 hours) Pre-ETS
*Acing Airport Travel*
We will discuss the ins and outs from start to finish, the tips, tricks,
and tools for successful airport travel for the blind or low vision
traveler. No matter where your skill level or confidence lies, we will have
suggestions for you to ace your experiences with FLYING colors!

*Friday, November 5* - 1:00 to 2:30 (1 hour 30 minutes) Pre-ETS
*Stovetop Safety and Cooking Techniques for the Blind and Vision Impaired*
Are you anxious about cooking on a stovetop due to your vision loss? Are
you a Blind or Vision Impaired cook interested in learning tips to make
cooking on a stovetop safe and effective? In this 90 minute presentation,
VRCBVI Personal and Home Management Instructors will guide you through ways
of cooking non-visually on an electric or a gas stovetop to help you gain
the skills and confidence you need to cook independently in your home.
Topics will include: How to label the controls on your stovetop, how to
correctly set and adjust temperature settings, how to center pots and pans
over a heat source, how to properly stir and turn food items on a hot
stovetop, tips for determining when foods are properly cooked, and helpful
tools for the task.

*Conversations About Blindness - Give and Receive: Sharing Holiday
Traditions That Mean the Most To You*
What role do you play in your family’s holiday traditions? In this session,
participants will share how they celebrate Thanksgiving, Christmas and
beyond. You will learn that blindness does not have to stop you from
bringing comfort and joy to others during this season. Sometimes, the
greatest gift you can receive is found in what you do for others.

*November is American Diabetes Month*
88 million adults have prediabetes and 34.2 million have diabetes. Join
this webinar to learn if you are at risk for developing diabetes, to get an
overview of diabetes, and to learn about resources that can help you better
manage your health to prevent or control diabetes.

*Discovering Freedom with the Long White Cane*
What is the long white cane’s purpose? How do I know if I am ready for a
long white cane? Why would I ever want to use one? What will my friends and
family think if I used a cane? Come join us for a lively discussion
highlighting the long white cane and the freedom it provides.

*Friday, December 10* - 1:00 to 2:30 (1 hour 30 minutes) Pre-ETS
*Let’s get cooking!!! Episode 1: Brownies*
Who doesn’t love a rich, warm brownie on a cold December night? Join
Michael Triplett and Dave Fuller for a 90 minute, step-by-step presentation
on Baking Brownies non-visually. Topics will include: accessing recipes,
ingredients and tools you will need, setting up your workspace, setting the
temperature on your oven, measuring techniques, stirring and pouring
techniques, how to crack eggs, how to safely place your dish into and take
out of a hot oven, and tips on cutting and plating your brownies. Just in
time for the holidays, learn how to make this tasty treat independently in
your home kitchen to share with your family and friends.
