NFBV Board Meeting Minutes

Jan 17, 2022

Mausam Mehta read the minutes from the Oct 31, 2021, business meeting. The
minutes were approved.

Mark Roane delivered the Treasurer's report, stating the affiliate's general
checking account balance as of Dec 31, 2021, as $121360.71. The report was
approved.

Bree Murray gave a Project Rise update, highlighting 35 current students, a
mix of in person and virtual events, and the search for an employment
coordinator.

Joe Orozco delivered a Chapter Leadership Institute (CLI) update, describing
a successful program.

Joe Orozco also delivered a convention operations update, covering our
current plan to meet in person at the Westin Tyson's Corner from Oct 28 to
Oct 30, 2022, subject to change.

Sandy Halverson gave a Silver Bells report, outlining the goals of the
program, and our hopes of spreading the word to rehab and other networks for
blind seniors.

Louise Walch gave a Bell Academy update, including an outreach plan and
collaboration with Project Rise this upcoming year.

We heard a National Convention update, in which Tracy noted the in-person
location in New Orleans, Earl Everett reported ideas on fundraising efforts,
and Mary Durbin discussed scholarship opportunities for first-time
convention attendees.

Sandy Halverson made a motion for the Virginia affiliate to contribute a
banquet ticket to all of those who have pre-registered for National
Convention from Virginia. The motion was adopted.

Tracy reminded chapters to contribute to the national funds.

Mark Roane stated the names and roles of individuals being compensated by
the affiliate. He made a motion that the Virginia affiliate acknowledge, as
per our national code of conduct, a potential perceived conflict of interest
with those being compensated as independent contractors and simultaneously
serving on the board of directors. The motion was adopted.

We then heard chapter and division reports, discussing efforts and
initiatives across the state.

Deepa Goraya updated us on our virtual Washington seminar from Feb 7 to Feb
10, briefly outlining our national priorities.

We then transitioned into a legislative advocacy session for Richmond
seminar, in which we discussed our 4 priorities, heard testimonials about
each, and noted best practices for legislative appointments.

The meeting concluded with a rundown of legislative teams for Richmond
seminar.

Respectfully submitted,

Mausam Mehta

Recording Secretary
