Good Morning,

Sandy received this newsletter from Virginia State Senator Adam Ebbin regarding hurricane preparedness. It has a lot of valuable contact information and I think it is useful to forward to everyone.

Dear Sandy,

Virginia is anticipating the arrival of Hurricane Florence, which is predicted to be a Category 4 storm when it makes landfall later this week. Governor Northam issued a press release<https://act.myngp.com/el/gsbzmerIgH-pcAQcdcpS4A==/JgGEYgqfUK170BxfxOvEtg==> Sunday, declaring a state of emergency and directing Virginians to prepare for the storm and portions of Hampton Roads and Norfolk have been evacuated. Significant potential impacts to Virginia may take the form of a coastal storm surge, catastrophic inland flooding, high winds and possible widespread power outages.

Flooding is the most dangerous part of a hurricane. Citizens should prepare for rising waters, flash flooding, and remember to never drive across flooded roadways. Most injuries and deaths occur when motorists try to cross flooded roads. Roads and bridges can be damaged or completely washed away beneath flood waters, and a few inches of water can sweep vehicles downstream.

As you probably know, much of riverfront Old Town, Alexandria near the Torpedo Factory flooded on Sunday night. Sandbags were distributed to City residents yesterday, up to five per household, at the corner of King and Lee Streets. Call 703-746-4800 to learn about future sandbag distribution. Low elevation neighborhoods in the 30th District in proximity to the Potomac River are at an increased risk of flooding. Information is available at https://www.alexandriava.gov/Flooding<https://act.myngp.com/el/gsbzmerIgH-pcAQcdcpS4A==/nW-1wKVtBg7qk3g8qE32ig==> to help prepare yourself.

Visit the Virginia Department of Emergency Management website<https://act.myngp.com/el/gsbzmerIgH-pcAQcdcpS4A==/csNmTr2nIUafQT265NK3zA==>, for more information and preparedness tips. Additional resources include FEMA’s “Make A Plan<https://act.myngp.com/el/gsbzmerIgH-pcAQcdcpS4A==/moY9_Rb-DEuBOsqhhYwShw==>” site, or the Center for Disease Control’s hurricane resource page<https://act.myngp.com/el/gsbzmerIgH-pcAQcdcpS4A==/GnQCGZ8DE_mOLJWolJ-pZg==>.

Make an emergency supply kit.

Include essential supplies that will last at least three days. Supply kits should include a battery-powered radio and extra batteries, food and water, toiletries, flashlights, a first aid kit and medications. Also, include items needed for infants, seniors, and pets. For a comprehensive list of supplies you should have in your kit, visit: http://www.vaemergency.gov/readyvirginia/getakit<https://act.myngp.com/el/gsbzmerIgH-pcAQcdcpS4A==/c4SCj0AiESsvdK_ASHxbRA==>.

Bring in or secure any object that may be blown about by high winds, including plants, patio furniture, garden decor, etc.

Do not connect your generator directly to your home's wiring. Connecting a portable electric generator directly to your household wiring can be deadly to you and others. A generator that is directly connected to your home's wiring may 'back feed' onto the power lines connected to your home.

Please remain at home during the storm.

In the event you must leave your home, create a family communications plan by discussing with your family what actions should be taken during an actual emergency. Decide in advance on a meeting place if your family cannot return home. Designate an out-of-town friend or relative as a point-of-contact, and plan for the specific needs of your household, such as transportation of medical equipment or pet evacuation needs.

If you must travel, take the following precautions:

  *   If you do have to drive, drive cautiously;
  *   If driving, decrease speed;
  *   Have a full tank of gas;
  *   Have a cell phone with a full charge with you;
  * Beware of high water; even 6 inches can cause you to lose control. Vehicles can float in 2 feet of water.

In case of a power outage, keep the following in mind:

  * Charge cell phones and laptops now.
  * Turn off major appliances such as heat pumps, water heaters and stoves. Unplug other appliances such as TVs, stereos, microwaves and computers. This will prevent damage to appliances and possible overloads to the company's system when power is restored.
  * Leave one lamp or light on so you will be able to recognize when power is restored.
