Happy New Year once again, and welcome to the first chapter meeting agenda of 2023. It’s a packed one, and there might still be another person slipped onto the agenda before Wednesday . . . but I want to get this out to you.
Recall that this month’s meeting will take place only on Zoom, pending location determination going forward.

7:10: WMATA Concerns and Questions: Members have been reaching out regarding issues with fare gate concerns, announcement concerns, etc. 
 Carol Lopez from WMATA has graciously agreed to give her time to the chapter. Please be very specific with concerns and questions: station, line, issue, etc.
As you can see from the below, we will be speaking with an informed and dedicated individual: 
Carol Peredo Lopez is Director of the Office of ADA Policy and Planning, Washington Area Metropolitan Transit Authority.  The Office ensures accessibility of public transportation including all Metro facilities and Metro-owned bus stops, vertical transportation, fixed-route transit, and equipment for people with disabilities. The Office also works for the continuous improvement of all of Metro’s accessible services and facilities. Providing safe and independent use of Metro’s accessible fixed-route services helps ensure that paratransit services are conserved for those individuals who truly need them. 
 
Carol’s experience includes the design and construction of transportation facilities, spinal cord injury centers, accessible homes, recreation facilities, school and university campuses, and community based buildings.  She has taught college level design courses and written numerous articles about accessible design.  She co-authored the popular book Accessible Home Design, and as the National Architecture Director for the Paralyzed Veterans of America, worked with the Department of Veterans Affairs to update their Spinal Cord Injury/Disorders Center Design Guide

Carol has served on federal advisory committees including one that helped create design standards for the Americans with Disabilities Act, she was also a member of the committee charged with updating ANSI A117.1 Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities.

Accessible Pharmacy Services for the Blind is a comprehensive, home delivery pharmacy service specializing in the needs of the blind, DeafBlind and low vision patients. They are the only provider of its kind and the largest blind-owned healthcare company in the United States. We will be joined by one of the co-founders of the company, Andy Burstein. Andy is a renowned advocate for accessibility in healthcare. In addition to leading Accessible Pharmacy Services, he advises universities, healthcare systems and a team within the World Health Organization on issues related to disabilities and accessibility. He has two sons and he lives in Philadelphia.

8:10 PM: Arlington County Blind Residents Support Group and Services from Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind: Shawn Calloway, NFB Board Member and President, NFB of D.C.


8:25: Location of In-Person Meetings, Hybrid, In-Person, or Alternating: There will be a brief update on this issue; members should reach out to board members or join the Board meeting when this is discussed. Board meetings take place the last Sunday of the month, starting at 7:30 PM.

The Zoom link will be sent out on the Friday before each meeting.
