“
It strikes me that I should make a pitch during the presentation for an
article about your senior division activities. I think that we are often
more general about what we do for seniors then we ought to be. My
observation when I go to the Colorado Center for the Blind is that the
seniors are the people who are most appreciative of our programs. Others may
appreciate them, but they take them as their right, not necessarily as a
blessing. My perspective is that they should be taken as both

**Last Month’s Meeting Minutes

NATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE BLIND OF NEBRASKA SENIOR DIVISION MEETING MINUTES

Monday, October 8, 2018

The NFBN Senior Division met by telephone conference on Monday, October 8,
2018. President Robert Newman called the meeting to order at 7:02 PM ;CDT.
Members present were: President Robert Newman, Vice President Barbara Loos,
Secretary Linda Mentink, Treasurer Cheryl Livingston, Board Member Nancy
Oltman, Dorothy Babel, Chris Boone, Geralyn Konruff, Brad Loos, Jerry
Whitlow, and Gwynne Widhalm. Guests were: Michael Jones from Nebraska and
Annely Rose from Florida.

Cheryl recited the NFB Pledge. Barbara will recite it next month.

Linda read the September meeting minutes. Cheryl moved, Nancy seconded, that
we approve the minutes as read. The motion carried.

Cheryl read the Treasurer's report as follows:

Treasurer’s Report-Senior Division

October 8, 2018

Beginning Balance Sept 10 $1464.32

Expenses

PAC plan for October $ 15.00

Ck #1232 to NFBN -Registration $105.00

Senior Division Scholarship

Total Expenses $120.00

Ending Balance October 8, 2018 $1344.32

Respectfully submitted,

Cheryl Livingston, Treasurer

Nancy moved, Linda seconded, that we accept the Treasurer's report as read.
The motion carried.

Cheryl explained that she had a corrected annual report, and wondered if we
should wait until our 2019 annual meeting to approve it, or if we could do
that at this meeting. After some discussion, it was decided that we should
do it now, and Linda should put both reports in the 2018 meeting minutes, to
be read at the 2019 meeting. Cheryl read the corrected annual report as
follows:

NFBN Senior Division Annual Report 2018

Beginning balance 10/14/2017 $963.53

Total deposits 929.65

Total expenses 453.86

Ending balance 10/5/2018 $1439.32

Notes:

There is a $10 difference in our favor in the bank balance and the reported
balance. The actual

Checkbook balance as of 10/5/18 is $1449.32. I believe this is due to an
adjustment made by the bank when we stopped getting paper statements.

$647.50 of the deposits was from B-Canes

$180.00 was contributed to the PAC plan

Nancy moved, Linda seconded, that we approve the corrected annual
Treasurer's report. The motion carried.

Robert asked Dorothy Babel from Columbus, a first timer and our scholarship
recipient, to share her thoughts about the state convention. She enjoyed it,
and learned a lot. She was scared that she wouldn't be able to do things if
she lost all her sight, but the more she gets to know other blind people,
she thinks "I can do this!" She enjoyed Devotions. She plans to learn
Braille. Linda, Nancy, Cheryl, and Barbara said they enjoyed getting to know
her.

Annely said that they just started a senior committee in Florida. They have
had three conference calls. They meet the first Thursday of the month at
8:00 PM Eastern time.

Robert asked for suggestions for guest speakers. He mentioned Gary Wunder.
Other suggestions were: Peggy Chong again, Curtis Chong, Fred Schroeder, and
Dr. James Nyman.

STATE CONVENTION. There were 84 registrants this year. Those of us who
attended the state convention shared what we liked and appreciated about the
convention. Barbara mention the core of Patti Chang's banquet speech:
patience, persistence, persuasion and politeness. Nancy thought that our
Senior meeting went really well. She also attended the At Large Group
meeting, which went better than she expected. She cheered the senior table
for winning both rounds of the trivia game Friday night. Having all seniors
at a table was not planned! Cheryl added that the meetings were well
attended, and the Student Division has a new president. She was on the
Scholarship Committee, and we awarded five state scholarships. We passed two
resolutions. The board is looking forward to our 50th convention in two
years. Barbara mentioned the Blind Parents meeting. Nancy said that the
agenda was nicely laid out. Chris enjoyed having a mini directors/former
directors confab. She was pleased that there were 15 in attendance at
Devotions, the most ever! She really enjoyed the travel panel on Sunday.

BRAGS AND DRAGS. Nancy mentioned that she won a doorprize, lost two of the
certificates, and got them back.

Gwynne has a new grandson.

Jerry thanked us for our prayers and thoughts and concerns during her
illness.

Dorothy's fifth grandson was born the day before convention.

In August Chris' cousin turned 90. Doug had never met her, so she and Doug
went to Maryland to visit her. They found the house where her mom grew up,
and were able to look in. They spent the day with all her cousins.

Cheryl moved, Gwynne seconded, that we adjourn. We adjourned at 8:32 PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Linda Mentink, Secretary
