[nobe-l] blind nanny in training

Kayla,

I believe there are barriers to being a nanny like transportation and
modifications to the home you'd need such as labeling the kitchen appliances
to cook for the kids. You'd have to have a real supportive family to make it
work allowing you to modify the environment, label not only the kitchen
items, but label the kid's belongings such as their clothes and cooperative
kids that are more verbal with you so you know where they are and what they
are doing.

Being a nanny is like being a mother almost so you have to dress and feed
the children if they are young. If they can dress themselves, you still
might have to wash or fold laundry or help them pick out clothes. You will
likely have to prepare food as well so I hope your cooking skills are good.

I've never heard of a blind nanny but it might have been done.
You might want to try searching AFB career connect's site to see if there's
blind nannies out there.

I'd say definitely try it and go for the training or whatever you are doing
to prep to be a nanny, but do have backup plans if you cannot find work.
I think tutoring as a private business would be more doable with less
barriers. But you should do something you feel you are called to do.
What is your educational background? If you know particular subjects well,
that's a good selling point to tutor.

Good luck to find employment!

Ashley

If there are any blind nannies or blind governesses (teachers who
teach in private homes) on this list, please help me. I have decided
to go into private childcare by being a nanny or governess and I need
help. Please contact me either on or off list to share experiences.
Did any of you have guide dogs while working because I am planning on
getting one while in school? Was it hard to find your first family
that you worked for? Are you still in the same field of work or have
you changed? Was it hard if you went to school for nannying or
governess training? Thank you for contacting.

Kayla
