[Ohio-talk] Fwd: [AERNet] Story on NPR

There is a link to an NPR report toward the bottom. This psychiatrist
acts like he has invented the wheel where loss of vision is concerned.
We need to let NPR know how wrong they really are.

I posted on the story wall. So did an OT who was upset because NPR
neglected to say that the person who did the therapy was an OT.

So, this seems like a ripe opportunity for AER to provide information
to NPR… I have listened to NPR enough to know they air follow up
rebuttals and the like to stories. Not being a VRT I feel
unqualified. Any takers?

Yes, I heard it and I had exactly the same impression...and what I
thought was a travesty was that there was no suggestion regarding
seeking out the assistance of a VRT at all...it was as though older
people who lose their sight are just on their own without any help
available to them at all. Just another case of "they don't know what
they don't know!" on the part of the doc. There was one mention of a
magnifier that hung around one person's neck but no mention as to how
she found it. Probably by accident stumbling around in some store or
whatever!

Did anyone else hear this morning's NPR story about coping with vision
loss. It was about a psychiatrist who "decided to test a style of
psychological therapy called behavior activation. This treatment helps
give patients strategies to build on whatever functional vision they
have so they can continue their day-to-day activities and carry on an
active social life. Rovner wanted to see if the approach would help
people with macular degeneration ward off depression." Basically, it's
vision rehabilitation therapy, but it's covered like the doctor
discovered the light bulb.
