[Ohio-talk] Resolution Regarding OOD Passed at Convention

We were happy to connect with you again too. There are several issues
of concern with OOD. First, Ohio does not have a rehabilitation
center where adults can go to learn the blindness skills that will
make it possible for them to learn skills for today and in the future.
We have one center where people can go for a few weeks and learn some,
but not all skills. Most people see the different blindness
professionals once a week. This can take months of training and the
individual still will not have the appropriate skills. If you want to
learn to be a successful blind adult you need to be immersed in
blindness. The state will not pay for individuals to attend centers
that could provide the appropriate training. OOD, in general, does
not understand blindness and the needs we have that are different from
other disability groups. They want a one size fits all because that
is easiest for them. How many BSVI counselors did you see at the
convention. I met one on Friday from Toledo. If they want to truly
understand blindness they should be attending places where we meet and
get to know us on a personal level. Another issue is the lack of
braille instruction for blind adults. They say blind adults do not
need to learn braille on any level because there are other ways to
obtain the same information. I could go on and on and on but I hope
others will jump in here. I think this is a great place for this
discussion so we can inform our membership who did not attend the
convention. Thanks for asking.
