Welcome to Ability Front, and get ready for a big, huge read today! Hey,
it's Independence Day week-end, so you should have a moment amidst the
fireworks, right?
Please go directly to the links provided for additional information. If you
have any news, opportunities or resources you want me to include in Ability
Front, please email me privately for consideration of what you send. My
criteria are generally "Will this help fellow Ohioans with disabilities or
disability professionals?" and "Is it timely, affordable and relevant?" And
if you ever want to unsubscribe, likewise just send me an email.
I'm putting it out, now it's your turn to run with it and pass it on!
Thanks, happy explorations here as always,
Elizabeth Sammons

Communities across the US are celebrating Independence Day! For the
disability community, this includes the 17th anniversary of Olmstead v.
L.C., the landmark Supreme Court ruling that under the ADA, people with
disabilities cannot be unnecessarily segregated and must receive services in
the most integrated setting possible. Explore Olmstead and its impact on the
community here: http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=93195286

The National Council on Disability has issued an advisory brochure on
best practices for making prescription drug container labels accessible to
people with vision impairments. Based on recommendations from a U.S. Access
Board stakeholder panel, the brochure outlines voluntary methods pharmacists
can use to provide access to drug labeling. These include braille and large
print, as well as newer technologies such as digital voice or text-to-speech
recorders, radio frequency identification tags, and smart devices and
computers. The brochure also provides best practices to follow, such as
maintaining patient privacy and selecting containers that best support the
accessible label. Details here:

June was National Safety Month - and an opportune time for employers to
refresh their knowledge on how Occupational Safety and Health Administration
requirements can intersect with disability non-discrimination requirements,
particularly related to pre-employment screenings, the physical environment
and issues of confidentiality. To help understand when there is overlap,
AskEARN.org's ADA & Workplace Safety webpage provides explanations and
examples. Read the webpage
