[Ohio-talk] Ohio-Talk Digest, Vol 100, Issue 2; IRS Scam Calls

Jeanne Gallagher jeanne_gallagher at sbcglobal.net

I work for the IRS, and I can't tell you how many
calls I get about these calls. Here are some other things that might
interest you:
1. Often, when one does talk to one of these rascals you will note that ID
numbers (if they are given) are not like those of IRS employees. We have
ten-digit ID numbers, which we must give. Often phony ID numbers are
shorter, often with a mixture of numbers and letters.

2. Those rascals are often quite rude, will sometimes curse, and if informed
that they are suspect, will immediately hang up.

3. This was told to me by a local TIGTA employee. You can also call your
local police department. They work with Tigta. I know of one scammer who was
caught. He is now serving a prison term. These people are very hard to
catch. Plus, like the rest of IRS, they are somewhat hampered by smaller
budgets and staffing capabilities as a result.

Today is National Doughnut day. This Holiday is the first Friday in June. It
was started in the 1930's by the Salvation Army to raise funds for soldiers.
Today, only, Krispy Kreme Doughnut Corporation is celebrating their
favorite Holiday by offering a 5% bonus. That means instead of the standard
7.74% bonus the organization will receive 12.74%. It is on ScripNow or
plastic gift cards.

Hello Everyone,

This probably doesn't belong on this listserv, but this is an item of
concern.

I'm sure you're aware of call agents impersonating IRS officers, telling you
to pay them an owed tax amount in cash or face arrest. I've received
several calls of this type, and they all have the same automated voice
message that goes something like this:

Hello, this is the IRS. We have been trying to reach you. Our records show
that you owe back taxes to the IRS. Unless you pay the reflected amount,
you will be arrested and face charges of tax evasion. This is your final
notice...

Don't be Fooled. These people are scammers, usually from India, Jamaica, or
other countries. They tell you that you can resolve your case if you pay
them the amount you are presumed to owe. They don't accept credit cards,
just cash. They will tell you to go to your bank, withdraw your money and
if the bank asks you the reason for such a large withdrawal, you are to say
that it's for your own personal use. Then they tell you to go to a
nationwide store such as Albertson's, Safeway, etc. and get a voucher, which
they will collect in a number of ways.

I'm sure you all know about these alerts, especially since they're reported
on many occasions on the evening news. I usually don't answer the phone,
and that's how I avoid them. However, I hgot tired of receiving these
annoying solicitations, and I reported the recurring incident to the
Treasury Inspector General Tax Administration (TIGTA).

https://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam_ok.shtml

Additionally, I called the Attorney-General's office and filed a report with
them.
1-(800) 282-0515.

The number that showed up on my Caller ID is a Washington State number:
(206) 823-3819, and there are other numbers with the same area code and 823
exchange from where these calls have originated. We all know that these
scammers are not from Washington State or from the United States, for that
matter. They're using a U.S. number as what's called "ID masking" to call
from abroad.

I don't think anything will happen from these reports, but at least, I'll be
just that one more person who took the time to inform the authorities.

Melina,
Thank you for this detailed information. It provided more than the local
news has. I have seen the Washington state area code on my caller ID. There
are so many scams out there that it can be difficult to know if a call is a
true fundraising cause that you just might want to support. I'd suggest
folks ask to have information sent rather than a donation using a debit or
credit card. I had a scam call shortly after a Columbus police officer was
shot. The caller was upset about sending me something in the mail because
that process cut into the funds raised. This was supposedly for the family's
of officers who'd fallen in the line of duty.

Be careful!
Shelbi

Hello all,?Not only is the June 26th Charity Day 5k rapidly approaching, but
so is National convention in Orlando. As most of you know, Ohio is famous
for it's M and M's sold during convention as a staple to get through the
long , busy days. We are known for our chanting of Ohio M and M's all
through the halls and prior to start each day, lunch time and after general
sessions. People look for our delegation in general sessions because they
need their snack. All that said, it is a fundraiser that has been done for
years. Many years ago I was given a box of these tasty treats at convention
and told that we all pitch in to get them sold.?
OK, I got it done and have done so every year that I have gone since. I
chose to pay for mine when I pick them up, a greater incentive to get them
sold and recoup my money! Youth peddling the Candy is an awesome way to get
them sold, as who can resist a kiddo? ?Believe me when I say that I have
enlisted fellow fedetationists kids to do it and also had Dusty calling out
Ohio M and M's. Creativity works. I would love to know who all is attending
convention so that Richard places an adequate order for the sellers. Anyone
can sell them, but especially if you are receiving assistance from the
affiliate or chapter, ?please help us replenish funds. If you would comment
below ?that you are attending and will help us in this fundraiser, it would
be wonderful.Thank you all.Carol

Recognizing the ability for deaf/blind communication, Gallaudet University's
Tactile Mind presented at the White House this week." This is a network of
scientists, scholars, and community leaders drawn together by a mutual
interest in the movement. The protactile movement is based on the idea that
all human activity can be realized via touch-that hearing and vision are not
necessary for such things as navigation, social interaction, and
communication. Using Protactile communication, Presenters shared
developments with students, entrepreneurs, educators, policy makers,
government officials, publishers, and researchers.

Greetings Fellow Federationists:

The 76th Annual Convention of the National Federation of the Blind is almost
here! Before everyone's schedule is entirely packed, I wanted to write to
you to ask for your assistance. The NFB-NEWSLINER team will be hosting a
demonstration room and a table in the Exhibit Hall once again this year.
Both of these activities will require a number of volunteers and we would
greatly appreciate any time that you could offer to help with our convention
activities.

Our demonstration room will be available for walk-in traffic for five hours
on:

Friday July 1, 2016 from 1:00 - 6:00 PM, and
Saturday July 2, 2016 from 1:00 - 6:00 PM

This demonstration room is intended to answer questions, distribute
materials, demonstrate access methods, resolve subscriber issues, and sign
up new subscribers. There will be several workstations set up in the room.

Our tables in the Exhibit Hall will need to be staffed for a total of twenty
hours starting on the following schedule:

July 1, 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM

July 2, 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM

July 3, Noon - 1:45 PM; 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

July 4, Noon - 1:45 PM

We will be looking to fill these times in two hour increments and we are
looking for support from our members who are familiar with the NFB-NEWSLINER
service.

Please respond and let us know via e-mail (talbee at nfb.org), or by calling
(410) 659-9314, extension 2354, if you will be able to volunteer during
convention. If you already have activities scheduled during the times listed
above, please let us know that as well so we can work around your
availability.

Thank you in advance for your time and for your volunteer work.

Best regards,

Scott White

Director of Sponsored Technology Programs

National Federation of the Blind

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want;
blindness is not what holds you back.

pick them up, a greater incentive to get them sold and recoup my money!
Youth peddling the Candy is an awesome way to get them sold, as who can
resist a kiddo? Believe me when I say that I have enlisted fellow
fedetationists kids to do it and also had Dusty calling out Ohio M and M's.
Creativity works. I would love to know who all is attending convention so
that Richard places an adequate order for the sellers. Anyone can sell them,
but especially if you are receiving assistance from the affiliate or
chapter, please help us replenish funds. If you would comment below that
you are attending and will help us in this fundraiser, it would be
wonderful.Thank you all.Carol Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android

Dear Fellow Federationists,

A month from now, the convention will be over. This means that all energy is
pointed toward the final preparations for this year's national convention. I
encourage you to be sure that our convention rookies have good mentors and
that our convention veterans find new opportunities to help build the
organization. Additionally, I encourage you to make sure those who cannot be
at this year's convention receive the information about the live streaming,
which should be available later this month. Our internet and social media
tools should allow us to engage our members that cannot be at the convention
for one reason or another. Although there is no substitute for being at our
convention, there is no reason for us to miss the opportunity to increase
the excitement back home.

News:

Convention Agenda Available:
The online version of the 2016 National Convention agenda is now available
on the NFB website <https://nfb.org/convention> in Word and accessible PDF
formats, as well as in Spanish.

Need Volunteers in Independence Market at Convention:
We are looking for volunteers to work in the Independence Market at the
convention. If you have some time to help, please contact Patricia Maurer at
(410) 659-9314, extension 2272, or Jen White at extension 2236. If we have
sent you a schedule please give one of us a call to let us know whether you
can work at that time. We appreciate your help to make the convention run
smoothly and to give our membership the opportunity to purchase from the
products in the market. We are in need of volunteers for only Friday, July
1, both shifts (8:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and 12:45 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.), and
Saturday, July 2, both shifts (8:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and 12:45 p.m. to
5:00 p.m.).

Space Available Status:
Last month, Senator Heller from Nevada introduced an amendment to the
National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to add the same space available
language that is already in the House NDAA to the Senate's version. This
amendment, SA 4235, already has one cosponsor, Senator Tester from Montana.
Please call your senators and urge them to cosponsor SA 4235 so that
veterans with disabilities rated as total can participate in the space
available program. More on this subject will be coming out as it is
available.

USA JOBS Now Available in NFB NEWSLINE:
NFB-NEWSLINER has added USA JOBS to the job listings feature in addition to
the over one hundred thousand listings currently provided to subscribers by

NFB-NEWSLINE? Expands Feature Allowing Independent Job Searches for the
Blind

Baltimore, Maryland (June 7, 2016): The National Federation of the Blind has
added USA JOBS to the job listings feature of NFB-NEWSLINE??, a free
information service it provides, with support from state sponsors, for
people who are blind and print disabled. These job listings are in addition
to the over 100,000 listings currently provided to subscribers by
CareerBuilder.com.
"The National Federation of the Blind is committed to ensuring that the
blind have independent and timely access to information, and also to helping
them find gainful employment so that they can live the lives they want,"?
says Mark Riccobono, President of the National Federation of the Blind.
???The enhancement to the job listings feature of NFB-NEWSLINE?? that we are
announcing today helps advance both of these critical goals.???

"NFB-NEWSLINE?????s job search feature, in addition to the over four hundred
newspapers and magazines, emergency weather alerts, and retail ads provided
on the service, is one we are very proud to offer,"? says Scott White,
Director of Sponsored Technology Programs at the National Federation of the
Blind. "We are extremely pleased to add USA JOBS to the more than 100,000
job listings already provided on the service by Career Builder."?

Now in addition to NFB-NEWSLINE?'?s existing job listings, subscribers can

Channel 5 news is interested in doing a story about voting problems. They
are supposed to do an interview with me this afternoon about general access
problems. But they think they would like to talk with people who have had
trouble with machines or who would like to vote by absentee ballot
independently. Please contact me off list if you are interested in this
project. Cheryl Fields, I think you are one who fills this bill. My contact
information is at the bottom of this message. Please contact me this

> National Federation of the Blind and Others Sue New York over Inaccessible
Online Voter Registration for People with Disabilities
>
> New York (June 9, 2016): The National Federation of the Blind, the Center
for the Independence of the Disabled, and individual plaintiffs who are
blind, today sued the New York State Board of Elections and Department of
Motor Vehicles (DMV) over online voter registration that is inaccessible to
people with disabilities.
>
> States are required by law to meet accessibility and confidentiality
standards when providing services such as online voter registration, but New
York is failing to comply, the complaint charges.
>
> Mark Riccobono, President of the National Federation of the Blind, said:
?The right to vote is a fundamental one, and equal access to this right
cannot and must not be denied to blind Americans. Equal access means the
ability to participate in all aspects of the voting process, including
registering to vote, with complete privacy and independence. The National
Federation of the Blind is committed to ensuring equal access for blind
voters in New York and across the nation.?
>
> ?There are many barriers that can stand in the way of New Yorkers with
disabilities exercising their right to vote. The shame of inaccessible
online registration is that there is an easy and inexpensive fix. It's a
mystery why the New York State Board of Elections refuses to do it, and it?s
disappointing. People with disabilities have the right to privacy and
independent registration and voting just like every other New York voter.
It's the law,? said Susan Dooha, executive director of the Center for
Independence of the Disabled, New York.
>
> ?Online voter registration is key to ensuring access to the ballot for
people with disabilities. Yet in New York, it's not just difficult for
hundreds of thousands of people with disabilities to register online, it's
virtually impossible,? said ACLU attorney Susan Mizner. ?We?ve told the
state where the worst barriers are. It can easily fix the problems, but has
refused to do so. ?
>
> Those barriers include DMV webpages and downloadable forms that can't be
read out loud by the screen-reader software used by blind and low-vision
people to hear and navigate computer screen content. On the privacy rights
front, the software cannot read the fillable form?s section on party
affiliation on the Board of Elections website; blind and low-vision voters
are forced to disclose this private information when they print out the form
and get someone else to help them sign it, destroying their privacy and
independence.
>
> Plaintiff Eva Eason of New York City encountered numerous obstacles when
attempting to update her voter information online after getting married.
Eason, who is blind, could not access the DMV site at all, and was only able
to access the Board of Elections online registration after getting
assistance from someone who is sighted, compromising her privacy and
independence.
>
> ?A lot of people paved the way and fought for me to be able to vote, so
why is New York making it so difficult?? said Eason.
>
> Plaintiff Meghan Schoeffling of Albany added, ?I was thrilled when New
York created an online voter registration form, thinking it would enable me
and others to register to vote privately and independently for the first
time. But because the DMV failed to ensure the site was fully accessible, I
was unable to register to vote without sighted assistance.?
>
> ?Everyone has the right to register to vote privately and independently,
and online services are a great way to make that happen. Yet, because the
state?s websites aren?t coded to operate with screen readers and other
accessibility software, voters with disabilities can?t access those
services. Voters should not be excluded from online registration or have
their privacy violated just because they have a disability,? said Disability
Rights Advocates attorney Christina Brandt-Young.
>

The Neuroplasticity and Development Lab invites participants to take part in
research studies at the NFB convention this year. The studies involve
listening to sentences, listening to tones, reading Braille and answering
questions. The goal of this research is to better understand how visual and
non-visual experiences contribute to cognition.
There are several studies available. You can choose to participate in one or
more of these studies. Each study takes around 1-2 hours and participants
are compensated $30 per hour for participating. Prior to scheduling a study
appointment we ask that you complete a pre-screening interview over the
phone to see whether you qualify. Among the qualification criteria,
participants must be congenitally and totally blind and between the ages of
18-50. The screening interview takes between 15 to 30 minutes. Those who
take part in the screening interview will receive a $15 Amazon gift
certificate.
To find out if you qualify and to sign up for study appointment please
contact us by either calling (410) 870-9895 or emailing
plasticity_lab at jhu.edu.
Thank you for reading our announcement and we look forward to seeing you at
the NFB convention.
