This is good information for those of you that live in Dayton. Please read the previous message. I’m not sure why Wanda didn’t just post this to the list.

A Note from the Executive Director

Hello and happy holidays! It is hard to believe that a year ago I was sending a welcome note as the new Executive Director of Diabetes Dayton. As I look back over the last 12 months, I am very proud of what we have accomplished with the help of each of you – our donors, sponsors, and volunteers.

* In July, 30 staff and 88 campers with Type 1 diabetes attended a week of fun, games, and friendship at Camp Ko-Man-She. It was heartwarming to see the campers just being kids like everyone else while learning how to better manage their diabetes.

* In November, we enjoyed beautiful weather for our Blue Circle 5K/10K Run/Walk with 222 participants. Funds raised from the Blue Circle event will support the programs and services of Diabetes Dayton.

* Our Wellness and Diabetes Expo (pictured above) was back for the first time since COVID with nearly 40 vendors, a variety of free health screenings, and informative breakout sessions. Close to 250 people attended the Expo to learn how to improve their health and wellness.

* We added a shelf-stable, diabetic-friendly food pantry. We are able to make this resource available to our clients in need through a partnership with the Dayton Foodbank.

You'll also see some exciting new additions to our programming in 2023!

* Starting in January, a Diabetes and Wellness Support group will be held monthly at our Diabetes Dayton offices. The group will cover topics like healthy eating, weight management, managing stress, and more. If you are interested in learning more, please contact our office.

* In June 2023, we will host Camp Tiponi - a brand new wellness camp for teens ages 14 – 17 with Type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, metabolic disease, and weight management issues. Camp Tiponi will be held at Camp Joy in Clarksville Ohio (transportation will be provided). To learn more, or to register, please call our office at 937-220-6611.

This past year has flown by. But in this short time I can certainly say that I have met so many amazing people, learned so much, and am very excited to bring these new programs and services to the Greater Dayton area. Thank you to each of you for your part in making Diabetes Dayton a true treasure for our community. Wishing you and yours a very happy holiday season!

She developed a business plan and secured donors and investors to start her first business. The first lemonade setup was June 18th and was a huge success. London decided not to limit her business to one day, but to continue throughout the summer. During her experience she learned a lot - including how to spend a little, save a little, and give a little. Miss London decided that she wanted to support Diabetes Dayton. She stopped by our Board meeting and presented Diabetes Dayton with a check from her Lemonade Stand proceeds. Thank you, Miss London and Jocelyn Cooke, for your support of Diabetes Dayton. Follow and support Ladybug’s Lemonade. Yes, she sells sugar free lemonade!

Managing Your Diabetes

Did you know that Diabetes Dayton offers Medical Nutrition Therapy counseling with a registered dietitian to help you manage your diabetes? A physician referral is required to make an appointment for one-on-one counseling. Learn important diabetes management skills with individualized nutrition education. Holiday Spirits

As we head into the holiday season, here are some guidelines to follow when enjoying alcoholic drinks!

*From Exchanges for All Occasions, Franz M. Minneapolis, MN: Chronimed Publishing

* Note the differences in calories and carbohydrates among alcoholic drinks.

* Discuss your use of alcohol with your health care team. Consider drinking only if your diabetes is well controlled and you are not pregnant. Alcohol can make some problems worse.

* Drink alcohol with meals or snacks containing carbohydrates, such as pretzels, bread sticks, or crackers.

* Alcohol makes insulin reactions harder to recognize. It also interferes with some medicines.

* Use alcohol in moderation (up to 1 equivalent for women and 2 for men per day). 1 Equivalent:

*     1 ½ oz distilled spirits

*     4 oz dry wine

*     12 oz beer

*     Mix alcohol with:

Free

*     Water

*     Club Soda

*     Seltzer

*     Diet soft drinks

Fruit/Vegetable Exchange

*     Unsweetened fruit juice

*     Tomato juice

*     V8

* Avoid sweet wine, liqueurs, and sweetened mixed drinks, try a wine spritzer made with club soda rather than a wine cooler, which is usually made with sweetened, fruit-flavored mix.

* Drink with someone who recognizes and knows how to treat a low blood glucose reaction.
