Hi Sara,

I too have ROP, but I have had it for so long, they called it RLV. I too have had problems with glaucoma. I know nothing about ophthalmologists in New York. I am, however, sure there are a bunch of them. If your medical plan allows you to select your own (they call it open panel in the insurance business) find one who accepts your coverage. If your plan is a closed panel, requiring referral from your general practitioner, have your GP set you up with an ophthalmological appointment. A good ophthalmologist can deal with the glaucoma and at least give you a start on the low vision. A caveat or two, and you being in the profession already know this, many eye doctors, no matter their specialty, think of blind people as medical failures. You will need to advocate for yourself, and ask questions to get answers. Don't assume that the doctor will give them to you.

I'll never forget an ophthalmological assistant who was convince that I must be able to see out of my left eye, since it was open and looked normal. She only gave up on the idea when I offered to take out my prosthetic eye and let her try it to make sure. You might call Carl Jacobson there in NYC. He may have some ideas of good ophthalmologists. Good luck, and keep teaching.

Hi, I/ve liketo post a [personal question to this list. I am a blind teacher of the visually impaired and blind currently serving 14 students at a non-public school providing vision education services. I havve a personal question I would like to post to this list. My blindness was caused retinoptthy oof prematurity. I infrequently experience galucoma. I used to use a great doctor but thos opthalmologist only deals with pediatrics. Due to medical emergency, it was suggested to see an opthalmologist at the eye and ear infirmary. Anyone know about this hospital"? Another profeessional who works with adults suggested seeing an opthalmologist at Helen Keller Services for the Blind in downtowbn brooklyn. However, no one seems to answers calls there. I am just wondering what people feelaabout low vision clinics versus using opthalmologists in hospital settings. Thanks for any response people have to share. Ithink I will keep my appointment at this doctor at the hospital, since my opthalmologist suggested it. But I am still wondering what is the difference of care in low vision clinics and hospitals. I also cannot help that I will have service my students on another day of the week. Thanks for any responses. Just to note, I don't share a lot personal information, but since I am a professional in the field I felt comfortable asking other professionals.
