Hi Martha:

My name is Sara Rooz. I am totally blind and teach students who are blind and visually impaired with multiple disabilities. I hav a suggestion for how to have your blind student present pictures'/photos. The simplest way is to have the student use the assistance of a sighted classmate,or adult to collect pictures and have the sighted person describe each picture to the student particularly such this is a picture of a car. Have the blind student braille the picture of ie.g. car in braille on labeling tape and attach the title of the picture to the correct picture. Next have the student arrange all pictures that have been labeled in braille in the correct arrangement for the class presentation. Use of a reader to describe aeach picture and ensure that each picture is labeled appropriately in braille is another idea.

Since i teach students who are visually impaired with multiple disabilities when using pictures for a student to look at I label each picture on the bottom in braille to ensure that I am presenting the correct picture to the student. I also will label each color of piece of a puzzle and then request that the student look at the red rectangle. For one student who has autism and is visually impaired I have developed a picture exchange communication system which consists of a board with velcro with particular pictures that have been photogggraphed by the student's para and I've labeled each picture in braille. I will then take the correct picture off from this board and present it to the student and ask the student to look at the picture e.g. picture of the puzzle and then request the student to hand the picture of puzzle into my hand. I will then proceed to take out a particular puzzle and will indicate for the student to look at a particular shape and describe the shahpe and color. For instance, I'll say "Look at the red rectangle shape. The student wil look at the rectangle . I will then request for the student to place the red rectangle in the correct spot in the puzzle. Usually the student needs hand under hand assistance to do this task. the above system has been effective to teach the student how to request a desired item and make the student's needs known to other significant people such as parents and the student's classroom teacher and para. The student can already requesta desired food and wwith the picture of the particular food andindicate the desire for the food.

I hope my idea is helpful. I am sure other people may have other ideas how your blind student can complete the project you specified in your post.
