Orientation & Mobility Specialist (O&M)

The Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind (CLB) is seeking an Orientation & Mobility Specialist to provide individualized training to our clients who are blind or visually impaired.  The O&M instructor will teach clients to travel safely and independently.

Since 1900, CLB's mission has been promoting independence for people who are blind or visually impaired. We provide a comprehensive range of programs and services for the nearly 180,000 people in Maryland, DC and Virginia who are blind or visually impaired. We are seeking an experience rehabilitation professional who shares our passion for providing services to our clients.

Education/Experience Requirements:

1.                  A degree in Orientation & Mobility or completion of certificate program through an accredited university which meets the ACVREP 13 core domain areas.

2.                  COMS Certification through ACVREP.

3.                  NOMC (National Orientation and Mobility Certification) certification is accepted.

4.                  Dual certification O&M and VRT or O&M and TVI preferred.

5.                  1-3 years of experience in the field of blindness.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

1.                  Must be familiar with the blindness community and professional resources, as well as standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the vision rehabilitation field.
2.                  Excellent report writing and computer skills required.
3.                  Working experience with databases.  All case notes and reports are entered in our internal database system.
4.                  Excellent interpersonal skills with good judgment, attention to detail, ability to prioritize and meet deadlines, and ability to handle confidential material.
5.                  Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
6.                  Knowledge of second language helpful but not required.


Assistive Technology (AT) Specialist
We are seeking an assistive technology (AT) specialist to work with clients who are blind or visually impaired.  The instructor will assess clients to determine the needs and skill level of the user and provide individual or group training on job specific skills, workplace and assistive technology. The AT specialist will also conduct Section 508 testing and remediation.

Please note:  The individual in this position must be able and willing to travel independently between sites and to work in a variety of locations.

  *   Conduct assistive technology assessments and make recommendations for products, services, and referrals to assist clients in achieving training goals.
  *   Conduct individual assistive technology training with blind and low vision consumers in the DC Metro Area.
  *   Complete regular progress reports which clearly state the client's goals and progress.
  *   Coordinate and advise referral sources on products and training services appropriate to the client's needs.
  *   Provide AT software installation and training for clients as needed.
  *   Conduct Section 508 testing, document results, and make recommendations for remediation.


Education/Experience Requirements:

  *   Bachelor's Degree in the computer technology, education, or related field.
  *   A minimum of 5 years of experience in assistive technology training and assessment.
  *   High proficiency in  the use of adaptive technology and experience teaching in a classroom or employment setting.
  *   Working experience in Section 508 accessibility testing and remediation.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  *   Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
  *   Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  *   Ability to work independently in a fast paced environment.
  *   Travel independently to client home and work locations throughout the DC Metro area.
  *   Advanced knowledge of assisstive technology products for blind and low vision users (i.e. JAWS, ZoomText, Braille displays, etc.)
  *   Goal oriented with a proven track record of success in meeting deadlines and requirements.
