Ed, just a short answer to one part of your question. You can use the
BookPort software to reduce the pauses between phrases which speeds the
audio and can also increase the speed. You cannot change speed or
compression once you have converted the files with any kind of button press
on the BookPort.
People seem to like both the Stream and the Book Sense. I'll let others who
have knowledge of both discuss their relative merits.
