Birmingham, Alabama is the largest city in the state with an estimated population of 1,068,177. The city is nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains of Jefferson County and is recognized as a world-class medical and financial center.
The Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center (BVAMC), an integral part of the Medical community provides acute tertiary medical and surgical care to Veterans of Alabama. The Medical Center provides care to a veteran population of 420,000 in Alabama and treat approximately 57,000 unique veterans annually. The medical center serves as a referral center for veterans with 138 operating beds with care provided in almost all medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties. A highly integrated affiliation exists with the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Most staff physicians have academic appointments with our affiliate and the medical students, residents, and interns receive at least a portion of their training at BVAMC. The medical center has nine Community-Based Outpatient Clinics and a Blind Rehabilitation Center serving Veterans throughout the Southeastern United States.
The medical center has an active VA Research Program which includes Health Sciences, Research, and Development (HSR&D) and serves as the host for the Birmingham/Atlanta Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC).
Three universities, two colleges, four junior colleges, three technical schools, three religious training schools and four business schools compose Birmingham's education community. Newsweek recently named Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School number two on "America's Best High Schools" list, the Alabama School of Fine Arts as the "10th best high school in the nation", while The U.S. Department Of Education recently honored Crestline Elementary with the Blue Ribbon School award.
Birmingham's climate is typical of the South, warm with mild winters. However, the weather is not the only thing that draws new residents and visitors to Birmingham. Birmingham has remained true to its Southern charm.
The Birmingham area has attracted regional notice with dozens of major attractions including the Birmingham Zoo, Vulcan (the world's largest cast iron statue), McWane Science Center & IMAX, Barber Motorsports Park, the Civil Rights District, Birmingham Museum of Art, Children's Museum, Alabama Adventure theme park and the Birmingham Race Course with live greyhound and simulcast thoroughbred racing. The area is home to an abundance of lakes and parks as well as some very fine golf courses. Many bike paths can be found throughout the city limits as well as picturesque areas. There are 8 large malls located in the Birmingham area, including the Summit and Galleria, each with over 200 high-end and specialty shops. Whether you are looking for elegant dining or a casual deli, you will be able to find it in Birmingham.
