Ashley,

I have found through my experience that to avoid all those headaches,
one ought to get a holster which can be attached to a belt or pants
so the cane is always at one's hip.
I have found it easy to negotiate keeping track of the long, white
stick while walking through a store with customer service. It is
great for riding on a bus as well.

I know they are available at the lightHouse, here in San Francisco,
and I'm sure other places will have them or no where to get one.
