[Sportsandrec] road racing

Some of my favorite tandem cycling races were the USABA National Road
Championships that were held in conjunction with the Masters Road Cycling
Championships in the tandem category. Which BTW tandem races do usually have
age categories and gender categories. Tandem races either for the disabled
or not, are few and far between, so when the events were combined it was
very exciting to have a big field of competitors and yet with the USABA
category we also were racing for placements on international teams, etc. It
also was a great way to get more people involved and to be potential pilots
and hopefully to serve as an opportunity to make other blind athletes aware
of the sport. Not to mention the huge opportunity for people to learn more
about the abilities of blind people.

Lucia,
I think that special categories are fine in elite and/or large races.
The main concern is with those situations in which only a few blind
people are racing and people end up with an award that doesn't mean as
much by no fault of their own. The best strategy, in my view, is to race
everyone in a given event, and if you get an award in a special category
that you didn't create, so much the better.
