yeah.
check out the stuff from eton.
i love this company and most of my radio gear is from them.
actually, now that i'm thinking about it, all of my radio shortwave gear is through them lol.
you can get shortwaves and all mode weather radios all in one radio actually and it's about as big as a big phone.
 check out their stuff at
 http://www.etoncorp.com
as to ham radio. are you fermilure with a CB radio?
it's kind of like that only on a much bigger skiell.
 wow, i can't spell.
anyway, ham radio is something you have to take a test for and i'm actually working on that myself. i've always been into ham radio but the fact there's a test involved provents me as i hate math lol and i don't see why you need to know about electricity to run a darn radio. anyway, enough of my griping.
i hope this helps you. if you have skype and want to talk further off list feel free to give me a call.
my site has my skype listed for people to do just that but for time sake i'll just give you all my id and anyone may add me.
 my skype id is djtimothy1
by the way, a shortwave radio yes is for intertainment but it can also keep you up to date with weather events.

Yes, generally bulky, and someone who can actually help you needs to be listening. To replace these I use my smart phone with the "find my phone" feature activated. Even if you are out of cell range, the GPS will still pick up a signal, and that signal is what these "find me" apps use. Then, I simply give someone at home access to that account. If I don't return at the prescribed time, this trusted person can activate the lost phone feature and give rescue my location (or the location of the bear that ate my phone).

Is an all mode weather radio a specific kind of weather radio? We have a weather radio at home, but it has to plug into an outlet. And did you mean fire starter kit?
