[Sportsandrec] Weight Training

Hi Jason,

I've got a Smith Gym with a few bars, pulley attachments, leg attachments
and I've also got a decent dumbbell set. I used to rely on judo to keep
things in check, but until I find a nearby dojo, I need to find another
means of building a good tone.

What I don't have is a good way to do cardio. I'm not above running in
place, but I'm too easily distracted to keep that up for long and am not
sure if I should get an elliptical or a treadmill to keep the heart pumping.
The elliptical I bought secondhand a few years ago squeaked a lot no matter
what I tried to fix it. It wouldn't allow me to adjust resistance, and I
usually wound up with upper back pain. I always preferred the treadmill in
the gym, but I hear ellipticals are supposed to be easier on the knees as
you get older. Ultimately I'd like to own a system I can use for a good long
while and a good starting plan to get me going.

Also, any tips to stay motivated wouldn't kill me. There's a gym at work,
but my lunch time isn't long enough to efficiently jjump out of and back
into a suit. My commute is long enough as it is without adding more time
after work. So, that leaves me on my own to cheer myself on, and while
that's great during the summer, winter is altogether a different story. I
would appreciate any tips and guidance.

Joe

Hello Joe. I am in route to getting certified as a personal trainer so I can
help you figure out a good routine that is effective and accessible. I would
need to know what your goals are. Are you trying to lose fat, build muscle,
or just maintain overall good health? Also how often do you intend to
workout in the week and with what equipment is available to you?
