good; nice to know judo is cheapest. I'd probably pick judo or bjj if I did
a martial art.
Yes, I'll look into it when I can afford it.
Ideally, I'd like to pay month to month because it’s a recreation thing for
me and I do not anticipate doing it for life and becoming a highest
blackbelt; if I can master it and feel I can commit to it, that's fine. But
otherwise, I'd be happy trying it a while and being a white belt.
Prices for all gyms around here were not online, so I was not surprised that
pricing was not covered for martial arts schools.
I'll just call some and see what they say.
That $60 sounds about what a large gym would cost around here; I live in a
metropolitan area.
The fee doesn't sound too bad since you have unlimitted classes.
When I tried aikido at the Ki society dojo, they let us pay month to month.
So, yes, I suppose it depends on the school.

Hi Ashley,
It really all varies from club to club. Many of the BJJ/Tae Kwon Do/ Karate
places require contracts like a gym. I don't know of any judo on that does,
although I supposed there may be some out there. Also judo is going to be by
far the cheapest. My
Club is $60 a month for as many classes as you want to take and we
Offer 8 classes a week for adults. Of course price depends on the market.
You're going to pay more in New York than Alabama. We offer discounts for
paying for multiple months ahead of time (6 mos or a year). I'm surprised
you couldn't find prices on the websites. That would be a red flag for
me....
As for class levels, generally it is divided by rank. Most places have a
set schedule for testing and promotion. At my dojo its quarterly. Our
beginner/advanced class division is fluid and based more on how a person.
Progresses and how hard they want to work.
Anyway, what you should do is go to the club and talk to the coach since
every club is going to be different.

Hi all,
Some questions about martial arts practice.
I noticed that most schools have different martial arts at their dojo. Well,
some only have judo.
But many have a handful of them. They also have classes marked “beginner” or
“all levels” Also, intermediate or advanced is mentioned sometimes.
Would it be a correct assumption that all levels involves different belt
levels?
Its my understanding you have to join a school to take and practice classes;
like joing a fitness club. You belong and to one, and I assume you pay
monthly or some set schedule. So my questions.
Is it common to join a school? What are the fees like? I mean a price
range. I would be concerned about the expense. Is it under 100 dollars a
month?
I noticed no school placed their prices online but most other details such
as class times are there.
Is joining a long term commitment? I wasn’t sure if it was a contract or pay
as you participate kind of thing.
How often do you go to classes? Once a week, would be my guess.
How long are classes?
I see some schools have a period of time marked “open practice” or something
like that. I assume that you can come in during this time with a classmate
and practice without an instructor.
If you attend a dojo, is being ranked mandatory? Do you have to be tested to
get another belt? Do you have to go to tournaments or competetions to keep
being a member?
Just some practical questions.
Ashley
