Pasted into the body and attached is a news release example and a news
alert example. Again, pay attention to the formatting. Some of the
formatting may not show up like the line separating the news release and
alert info from the boiler plate info. First are tips then a news
release example, followed by a news alert example.

News releases should begin with a headline that grabs readers attention.
Use action verbs in the heading.

Make sure to follow AP Style when drafting a news release. The lead
should pertain to the story itself. Only include info in your lead that
is directly about the story/person/event the news release is about.

Quotes should be their own paragraphs and be relevant to the story.
Again, adhere to AP Style.

News alerts are short reminders that follow up with news releases.

Follow the what, when, where, and why format. Use only information
relevant to the event.

End with any other information that may be pertinent or interesting to
the event.

Boiler plates should be short and follow the news release and alert. It
is best to separate boiler plates with horizontal lines.

Unless submitting to a print publication, these documents should be
titled news releases since press release refers only to print. Many
professionals still call these documents press releases, but it's best
to use news release if submitting to both print and non-print media like
news stations.

Midlands Mentoring Partnership Strives to Boost Youth Potential

Omaha, Neb., Jan. 25, 2011-Midlands Mentoring Partnership works to
decrease the number of at-risk-teens with its annual mentoring
conference on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2011.

Midlands Mentoring Partnership has been implementing mentoring programs
throughout Nebraska since August 1999. The organization seeks to help
youth realize their potential. Studies show that youth who are mentored
are more likely to stay in school, work hard to receive good grades and
attend college.

"Research has shown that volunteer mentors can play a powerful role in
reducing drug abuse and youth violence as well as boosting academic
achievement," said Deborah Neary, executive director, Midlands Mentoring
Partnership.

Midlands Mentoring Partnership will hold events throughout January
including its annual Mentoring Conference and Recognition luncheon on
Wednesday, Jan. 26 at the Coco Key Hotel located at 3321 S 72 St. from 9
a.m. to 4 p.m.

Keynote speaker, Dr. Andrew Mecca, Lifeplan Institute's chief
inspirational officer and co-founder, will address how to help teens
discover self-esteem and reach their full potential.

Recognized as a national leader in youth mentoring, Mecca has more than
40 years experience in the field. He has written several books
including "Lifeplan: Tools Every Teenager Needs to Thrive not Merely
Survive."

The Midlands Mentoring Partnership will also award the Advocate of the
Year to a local business or organization committed to mentoring youth.

Following President Obama's proclamation issuing January as National
Mentoring month, Midlands Mentoring Partnership strives to build
confidence and goals in Nebraska's youth.

"Across our nation, mentors steer our youth through challenging times
and support their journey into adulthood. During National Mentoring
Month, we honor these important individuals who unlock the potential and
nurture the talent of our country, and we encourage more Americans to
reach out and mentor young people in their community," said President
Barack Obama.
