Chris,

I think it depends on the scope of the project. Yes at 5k word count
for a smaller project it would be a lot of real estate taken. Out of
say an 80k word novel, 6% might even be a bit long to get into it,
but you are introducing a group of characters. I've read
published works out there that were a whole lot slower to get into a
story or first base. I still enjoyed the writing style, interaction
in the story, and how you kept it moving through action. You showed
not told which makes a good writer. Perhaps you hadn't thought of
the entire projects storyline or conclusion? In songwriting it is
called storyboarding. Basically knowing what revelations come at each
base on the field before we hit it home :).

That brings a question with respect to longer projects which I'll put
in another post.

Brad
