I have Office 2010 and I'm thinking even earlier versions of Office and
windows work about the same.

So to put a shortcut on the Desktop- go into your start menu, go to All
Programs, arrow down to the program that you wish to work this small bit of
magic on to place its short-cut on your Desktop. Once you are on the desired
program's menu option/name, press the applications key (it is the key right
to the left of your right- control key. Arrow up or down to the menu option
called "SendTo," and that is a submenue, so either do a right arrow to open
it up or press enter to open it and then arrow down to the option called
"Desktop, create shortcut." And press enter and you will again have that
shortcut on your Desktop.

My outlook express is on my list of programs, when I click on the START
button on the bottom left hand corner. I can open it from there.
but, it used to be an icon on my desktop. I was doing a cleanup of my
computer, defragging and stuff like that. Somehow, it was gone from my
desktop after that. I still have not figured out how to make it come up on
the desktop, instead of me having to go to the list of programs, and then
click it on from there.
