Bill,
You bring up an interesting point. This is one of many things that can fall
into the category of being writers' blocks. I struggled for decades, not so
much from the religious issue, but from a fear of portraying realities that
would reflect badly on living people or that would cause people I loved to
be sad because they would guess that some of my fictional tales had their
roots in reality. I started several novels and gave up on them because of
the fear of their reprocussions in the real world.

Wow, you have put one out there that has a lot of interesting implications.


Picasso's statement encapsulates the essence of the concept of a multiverse.
This theory holds that whatever the laws of physics and probability permit
could in fact exist in some universe.  The ramifications of such a state of
affairs are at once fascinating and disturbing.  For example, there could be
analogs of me who are experiencing better or worse circumstances, of course
also depending on how we define better or worse.  

The concept of the lie when it comes to fiction can present difficult moral
dilemmas, especially for those of us who say we are people of faith in God.
We are taught "Thou shalt not lie(or bear false witness)."  We can find it
difficult to enjoy or create fiction, being warned of its potential
pernicious effects on society or ourselves.  We are told Flip Wilson's
expression "The devil made me do it" isn't an excuse for sinful actions.  

I admit to struggling with these issues myself, and desiring to feel more
free about them.  I've regularly had mental blocks about this throughout my
life.  I guess this also touches on the age-old dilemma as to whether art
imitates life or life imitates art.  The relationship is probably in fact
symbiotic.

Thanks Bridgit - Here is another quote that is of importance to a writer; I
think so, anyway. 

One of my favorite quotes is from Flip Wilson --- any of you remember him?
No, he was not a philosopher --- he was a comedian back in the 60's and
70's. And so he once said --- "A lie is as good as the truth, if you can get
people to believe it."  

Interesting, quote! Think of it; not all lies are bad, though I suppose the
word "lie" normally denotes a negative. Yet how much of what is written is
not truth? What percentage of "good stories" be they fiction or memoir are
based upon a lie?
Or, when is a story a lie, an/or a lie a story?
