Certainly I'm no expert, but I suggest that your friends check the 
Smashwords guide as to how they need the cover to be submitted.  They do 
have specifications, and I know someone who had trouble when the person 
doing the cover wasn't familiar with the process.  Of course someone else 
may have other suggestions.  I got someone from Mark's list to do mine, so 
may not be the best person to give advice.
